Infra red remote using mobile phone?

Does anyone know if you could operate a Nikon D60 (or other cameras) using a mobile phone or a Pocket PC with IR? I believe it is possible to operate quite complex functions on a TV by programming a Pocket PC, so it might be possible to operate the much simpler function of closing a switch to take a photo, I would have thought.

Yes and No.

I found this for a Pentax - but reading the comments it seems unusable and useless!

Apart from that, information seems pretty sparse. Shame really as i would love it to work.

Re: Infra red remote using mobile phone?

I would say yes but haven't tried...

Devices such as iPaqs come with IR transmitters and usually software called Nevo, at this point all you need is the Nikon remote to 'learn' from or the discrete code off the net. I had a quick look and found ones for th D70/D50 but it's all taken from the ML-L3 transmitter RC Files: - Search (1)

So you need:-
A device that transmits the IR code
Any old freeby software on it that will send the code
The code itself either learnt from the Nikon remote or the discrete code off the net

Re: Infra red remote using mobile phone?

Its a good idea but I don't know if the IR on a mobile phone would be strong enough to stand far enough away to make it worthwhile.

Re: Infra red remote using mobile phone?

Problem with the infra red on the D50 was that the signal had to come from the front of the camera (sensor on the front). I made a sort of "dish" which helped when trying to fire from behind () but now have a wireless unit made by Photox (Photix ?) for my D300 which works superbly.
