Cheap DSLR for going to Borneo

My friend is going to Borneo on an adventure once in a lifetime type of thing, he will be in the rainforest.
He would like to take a camera but doesn't want to take a compact camera, he would like a DSLR but he has a budget for about £50 as it will most probably be bashed around alot and likely to be broken.
If there are any rugged DSLR's i'm sure he would pay more if it was going to get through the trip.
Any ideas?

£50 .. will get him ( with luck) a decent second hand non DSLR
As for being bashed about even a bridge camera wont like that , they are precision electronics and I suspect the variations in temperature and humidity are more likely to test the durability rather than risk of being bashed around TBH
Whatever he buys , a few card and a spare battery would help.. in addition to the actual camera.. £ 50 will simply not do

Assuming its £500...

I dont think any of the likely candidates are weather sealed though there all pretty solid and rugged if you treat them with soem care.

Re: Cheap DSLR for going to Borneo

Nope no typo, I guess he assumed he could seeing as I got my Olympus E-410 for £170.
I'm guessing the only options he has is a second hand SLR hybrid (the ones with non removable lenses) or a compact.

Re: Cheap DSLR for going to Borneo

Cheapest dSLR is likely a canon 300D which from a quick look at ebay is gona be around £100, and its big and slow and if they dont know how to use it wont get them any better pics than a P&S and get in the way.

Oh and you need lens's, memory, tripods, filters, bags etc etc
