D300 Mirror up lock- Moutain or molehill ??

I was aware that the D300 has no self timer but thought a remote release would sort that out- wireless of course- cable release just seems so backwards- unless somebody is going to tell me that cable releases are actually much better

I am unclear as to whether the way mirror lock is implemented in the D300 would vibrate the camera and blur the picture or if in the absence of any mirror lock, the effect of the shutter release is negligible anyway?

Any D300 owners cursing their camera because of this?

Umm, I think you've got your wires crossed. Of course the D300 has both self timer and mirror lockup

It's just like my D200 - MUP and self timer are on the right hand drive mode dial.

More than likely- lots of contradictary stuff out there

That thread suggests that the dpreview is wrong- although it talks about mirror up not working in live view and having to flip again when the shot is taken- I think I'd given up and just wanted yes or no.

So, if I want to take a self portrait I wouldn't have an issues (apart form cracking the lens) with setting a self timer for 10 secs?

And if I was taking a landscape picture using the mirror up function which drops then picks up again before shutter release, it's not enough to blur the picture.

That thread is (correctly I assume) pointing out that you can't use liveview in combination with self timer or mirror lockup, but that's no biggy to be honest.

So, to answer your questions - yes and yes.

Rotate the drive mode dial to MUP, press the shutter release once, and the mirror raises. Press the shutter release again and the shutter fires.

Rotate the drive mode dial to the clock icon, and press the shutter release, and it counts down fires after a user definable period, set in custom menu c3 (self timer delay).

The D300 actually has the BEST mirror lockup mode around as you can flip to it instantaneously without messing around with digging in the menus. The only downside is because it's a physical dial setting, it stays that way permanently, so you have to remember to disengage it! I've felt like a right prune on a couple of occasions when taking action shots - fired the shutter, and wondered why the viewfinder has gone all dark

you have the option of 2,5,10 or 20 seconds on the self timer and it does have mirror lockup. A lot of the time I just use self timer as opposed to mirror lockup as it saves me having to mess about plugging in the remote cable release which isn't positioned very helpfully on the D300

I got confused with my Mirror lock up the other day, as usual I went headlong into it without consulting the manual. Figured out why I was confused I think if you engage the mirror lockup and don't fire the shutter within 30 seconds it takes the picture for you.
