Last years premium compacts. Good Buy now?

I am reasonably upto date with with digital things and fancied buying myself a new Digital Camera post christmas. Nikon P6000 and Canon G10 were pencilled in. I saw both in Jessops before Christmas at £280. Now in these exchange changed times the Canon is £100 more locally and the Nikon at better only £20 more, but this has made me re think plans. I am sure the bulkier Canon is the better machine but is more money and then it occured to me I might not need the 'latest' mode or all these machines have to offer.

The Canon G9 is now £230 and Nikon P5100 £205. The latter I could also use on my microscopes as well as my long term favourite stock microscope camera, my 'Nikon 4500 kit'. Has anyone any views whether these 'last years models' represent good value still or am I better off looking elsewhere?

Hi G9 is a bargain and for £229 dont hang about get it now !
I think its an exellent idea , Ive bought cameras on run out like this for several years still great cameras often better imo than the latest ones. ie G9 to G10 I like the G9 better for my type of shooting style.,

The G9 like youve noticed at £229 (I just got one ) and prefer it to the G10 at £340 because of its longer lens,

Have also rebought a D40 now they are so cheap ,and anouther spare for the same reason bargain !

Ive an Ixus 960is titanium body nice, just bought £127 from the same place youve seen the G9 A----N , but there up again now.great camera, again real value if they go down again, they well might do Amazon prices change daily sometimes .

I think the G9 is a real bargain now its come down because of the G10 and is better value and spec than the P5100 by a large margin and is my point of view, and in good light takes great 80 or 100iso pictures to nearly equal to my bargain D40 and 18-200 vr results ,

Next year around this time you will be able get the G10 for similar money if you like, but its overpriced now and is not for me because of its shorter range , you can buy the G9 for so little now, go for the G9 its a great deal at £229, much better value than so many newer / similar cameras out there is my point of view . Blackmore.

Canon 960IS for £127, lucky you seems to be £245 now! I would have had one for a present at that price!

If you don't mind the size the Canon G9 is a good buy at the reduced price but is getting close to some discounted D-SLRs which may be better depending on how you are using it. (Nikon D40 + Lens for £225.)

The following is a good site to check camera prices: Camera Price Buster - UKs cheapest camera gear

You can get the 960IS for £158.03 at Jessops use NEWYEAR code plus cashback via Quidco still cheaper than £245 price

Im in 2 minds myself if i should sell my TZ5 and go for a Canon G9 i like the more manual control and raw features it has but would it be any better in Low light than the TZ5 as i take quite few family photos indoors.

Yes has any one both TZ5 and G9 or tried both, how does the TZ5 compare IQ wise with the G9 is my question ,

Got myself a new G9 in PCW last week for £170
If you talk nicely to the man in PCW he might tell you where - if any - still have stock at this price.
