10 MP Compact - Which SD Card?

Hi There,

I am just about to purchase a 10.1 MP Compact Digital Camera, and as a bit of a newbie to any form of digital camera, I was wondering what the difference is in the various types of SD Memory Cards? And which one you guys would recommend me to buy? Will it even make much difference to a 10.1MP Compact?

I understand the difference in GB storage, but it was more the differences between:

- Secure Digital Memory
- Flash Memory
- SDHC
- Ultra Memory
- Extreme Memory
- Etc....

Please click here to see what I mean on Amazon: Amazon.co.uk: sd card

Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: 10 MP Compact - Which SD Card?

The Extreme cards go in stages the higher the number the faster the write speed after you take the photograph. SDHC stands for "Secure Digital High Capacity" you just need to check that the camera you are buying is compatible with SDHC.

I'd say personally for a compact you might want to go with something like the Sandisk Ultra II cards comes in at around £8 for a 4GB card, I use the Extreme III cards personally but this will possibly be a bit overkill for a compact.

Thanks Dazza!

It's actually this camera I am going for:
Casio EX-S10 Ultra Slim Digital Camera - Silver 2.7": Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

I just want the best quality photo's I can get from that camera really, and wondered if the Memory card will make much difference with that particular camera?

What would you experts recommend? I will go with your advice!

Won't affect the image quality at all a different memory card (to my knowledge)

Re: 10 MP Compact - Which SD Card?

Shouldn't affect image quality since it's digital. It's more of a case of speed of writing and reading data to the card, and arguably reliability of the card. I'd go for the sandisk ultra II's that Dazza mentioned

Re: 10 MP Compact - Which SD Card?

I'd recommend you go with a Class 6 SD SDHC card. The Transcend brand seems to get good ratings and are usually available at good prices (I personally bought 8GB Verbatim SDHC cards for my new Lumix TZ5).
