Waterfall pictures

Ok, so the weather has been terrible...but it does mean that any waterfalls will be that their best doesn't it ?

That was my thinking today as I headed to find the Loup o' Fintry which I'd been told was an impressive waterfall at the best of times. Seemed a shame not to go as it's only 10 miles away so off I went on my first dedicated outing (by that I mean minus kids, wife and dog).

I learned a few valuable lessons in the process:
Wrap up warmer than you think you'll need...after 1hr I was pretty cold.
Add a lens cloth to my kit bag...seems obvious but I am just learning !
Take a friend...after finding myself in some precarious positions, on damp rocks, next to a raging waterfall, with no mobile phone signal.

Anyway, on to the pictures.....these are my favourites....the full set is on flickr. Every pic I took could be improved, even I can see that, but your comments and criticisms are most welcome.

(1) An HDR picture merged with a slow shutter picture...probably my favourite

(2) My attempt at being 'artistic'...

(3) I like this one but it is spoilt by water drops on lens (a constant issue today)

(4) Another HDR effort

(5)

All in all I enjoyed my mornings photography and have plans to return when the falls return to normal. I could see some good spots to setup which required crossing the river, a big no-no today. Less water might also mean less spray/water droplets which was my biggest issue.

I hope you enjoy the pics.

Re: Waterfall pictures

Love number 1 & 2. Well done.

I guess you used ND filters?

Very much. The HDRs especially, which is odd as I don't normally go for them, but what you've done is very naturalistic and quite simply very nice to look at. Really like the composition of the first one. Fantastic.
Nice one.

Re: Waterfall pictures

A great set indeed, really like numbers 1, 3 (pity about the water on the lens) but still good and number 5

Re: Waterfall pictures

I found this on an online tourist guide :

Loup of Fintry
2 miles East of Fintry on the B818 Denny Road
One of the most attractive waterfalls in Scotland. On the River Endrick which rises in the Fintry Hills.
A ribbon of white water plunging ninety feet from a rocky ledge.

Believe me, it wasn't a ribbon today !!!

Re: Waterfall pictures

I like the first one very much. it's an unusual angle for a waterfall shot but it works brilliantly - well done!
I agree with other comments here that your HDR processing doesn't look overcooked - can't help wondering if they need a slightly higher black point though?

I liked the results of the HDR images so it's definitely a process that I am going to delve deeper into....

Re: Waterfall pictures

nice photos

On the subject of 'take a friend', at least tell someone where you are going and don't deviate from that location unless you inform them first. Always think safety first, especially in remote, dangerous locations.

Re: Waterfall pictures

I've resized my images after breaking 'embedded size' rules...I didn't think it mattered with embedded links....we live and learn. I must investigate a better method of doing this as I don't like the 'large' versions being so tightly aligned to the left margin.
