Spec me a bag (I just can't find one that's right)

I've tried a couple of lowepro bags over the years and when I change gear, nothing seems to fit. Right now my Nikon D3 nicely fits into the compartment in a Slingshot 200 but there's no decent space for my big 70-200mm lens and I find it quite annoying to use.

What I thought I needed was a Lowepro Mini Trekker AW. It's got a few more compartments than I need for 1 body, medium lens, big lens and 2x teleconverter.. but I don't mind a little wasted space. Problem is that it just doesn't look deep enough. Didn't have time to bring my D3 into work with me today but I don't see any way it'll fit in one of those as it's got the extra height of a battery grip built in.

If I go for something deeper than that then it seems to involve being much bigger all round.. then it's loads of wasted space.

So, anyone got a bag in mind that would solve my problems? Ideally I want a medium sized backpack with space for the above mentioned stuff and not loads besides.

Thanks in advance.

I carry a 70-300 in the top pocket of a slingshot 200, you tried your lense in there?

I find bags frustrating too, need one for every occasion

I know how you feel, I've had a Crumpler Pretty Boy backpack for a while but since i got the Sigma 70-200 and a tripod its just not big enough.

Im looking at the Dakine Sequence at the mo, seems to tick all the boxes.....

I guess I have been missing a "Quick Draw Ice Axe Sleeve" in my other bags. Joking aside, it does look quite good.

The earlier suggestion of a slingshot 300 isn't too bad but I just don't like the single straps.

A large amount of staring at the lowepro site has found me the Vertex 100 AW. It's not a massive bag but it is deep enough to get a pro size slr into it and it's a lot lighter than their alternatives that are deep enough. I guess i'll have a go and see what I think.

I have also tried one of these for a bit. They're a good bag actually but they don't work for big stuff. As all I use right now is a medium f/2.8 and a long f/2.8 it just won't fit, despite being 2 lenses. So I need something customizable but not massive.

Making an order for the one I mentioned in my previous post now though.. so hopefully it'll be cool. Internet seems to judge it as good.

Re: Spec me a bag (I just can't find one that's right)

How about a Tamrac V9?
I can carry my 40D + 70-200 f/4 IS (hood reversed) with a 17-55IS down one side and a couple of primes down the other.
i can at a pinch have the hood on the 70-200 the right way round but then it all sits at an angle.

EDIT: Sorry, i see you've already made your choice. Looks good, let us know what you think when it arrives.

Re: Spec me a bag (I just can't find one that's right)

I'm currently using a Lowepro Fastpack 250 which was free with a 12 month magazine subscription. I can get the 40D with grip and 100-400 fitted and still have room for 2 other lenses and flash. Room for batteries, cards etc and there's a seperate section above for jacket, lunch etc. Great bag IMHO.
