Hi,
Decided to take the plunge and replace my ageing SLR with a digital SLR. Budget around £650 including lenses. The Canon 450D package with standard and telephoto IS lenses looks attractive. Are the Canon kit lenses any good on the 450D? Should I be considering a body only with other brand lenses and can they be purchased within my budget.

Wait another month, save up another £200 and get a D90.

Or get a 40D now with change to spare ( there is a cash back)
You might even be able to get a "cheap " Canon 75- 300 . 55-200 ( or Sigma 70- 300 DG APO within budget)

For that money you can get the 40D and the 18-55mm IS lens, thats what im getting plus a case and compact flash card for about £730 then you have your cash back.

What SLR and lenses do you have today? Did you want to keep any of it? Also. do you know what sort of photography you might want to get into? Landscapes? Portraits? Wildlife? Birds? All of them!!? Might help narrow down some choices.

the new IS kit lens is supposed to be quite a bit better than the old one. And that one was ok.

Im in the same quandry. Have you looked at the Sony range? The a350 is well specified, and the a700 has a £150 cashback available... Im still torn between the 40d/D80/a350/700...

I mostly take landscapes & portraits hence the 450D kit lenses with the telephoto.

Hi,
Well finally took the plunge and purchased a Nikon D90. Suffice to say I'm well impressed with the images produced and keep kicking myself why I didn't get a DSLR long ago.
Have played around with its different menus for a few days now I think I'm fairly up to speed. One thing I can't figure out is how one gets a 1/200th shutter speed with the internal flash. All I ever get is 1/60th. I know VR for the lens has to be switched off, per the manual (p.265), and you can set the Flash shutter speed from 1/60th to 30s but theres no mention of 1/200th.
((((Edit: O.K stupid me. I was checking the speed with aperture priority in conditions with insufficient light. Hence The speed sets to fastest available for conditions ie. 1/60th. Tried Shutter priority with a strong light soure and now I can set the speed up to 1/200th with the flash.
Apologies for anyone being totally baffled.)))
Am I missing something?

| Congratulations. What is the synch speed of the D 90 with its built in flash?
I think You can usually choose a speed below but not above it unless you go fully manual
