See Top Digital Cameras Ranked by Frequency of Use. Camera numbers are taken from photo EXIF on flickr.
The stats within flickr itself are broken as they reckon the D300 is the least used of any Nikon camera.
It is interesting to see that the top 20 cameras are all Canon and Nikon.

Cool!
Makes my Sony A300 seem even more special and precious as it doesn't appear at all.
Must be very exclusive . . .

Im sure the popularity has to do with ability, and cost... not nessesarily in that order
Also the marketing machines of Canon and Nikon are not to be underestimated
It would seem that by slightly underpricing entry level and some midrange bodies to temp newcomers into a "system" ( and brand loyalty) , the results of the poll could have been predicted
This is despite some useful "innovative" features like inbuilt IS (ect) which the Sony ( with thier Konica Minolta heritage ) have

Brian | Looking at the Flickr Sony chart puts the DLSR usage rankings like this:
1st A100 603 users
2nd A200 218 users
3rd A700 167 users
4th A350 125 users
5th A300 65 users
To put this into perspective, the Canon Eos 400D has 6700 daily users, though it's way ahead of anything else.

The extensive, and excellent, lens line ups of Canon and Nikon are the primary reason for their present success I am sure. That's why I only considered these two when switching from film Pentax. I went with Canon, but it was close.

This only accounts for those users which leave their exif data intact. I'm sure there are many many thousands of users who use 'save for web' in photoshop and strip the exif data from the image completely.

Been watching the olympics and i swear I see loads of spectators in the close up shots using lumix cameras..probably more popular there than over here

Nikon D80 at number three.
No real surprise that the two Canons are at the top, they are very popular cameras! The Nikon D50 is slipping down a little though.
Interesting that you have to go a fair way down the list to find a cameraphone, and it's the iPhone! Shows that although a lot of people do use cameraphones, the SLR brigade are by far the most active on flickr. |

Although I'm still not convinced by the lens lineup of the Sony, they are starting to show some innovative thinking in the DSLR area. Their FF will be one to watch, I'm sure.
Surprised how high up the 40D is, considering its relatively new.

The top 12 are DSLRs with the Canon G3 at No 13. I suspect SLR photographers take more pictures and have bigger memory cards than point and shoot camera users. In terms of market share I am sure compact cameras are the biggest segment, but it looks their owners are so prolific when it comes to pressing the shutter.

From a Sony DSLR perspective, this doesn't really show us very much
12 months ago all Sony had was a single entry level DSLR and a load of lenses handed over to them from Minolta.
What would be really useful, is to see the % share that each of the DSLR vendors had 12 months ago, and how they look today - now that Sony has a 4 DSLR lineup with a 5th in September.
I guess we know that Sony's usage is growing, but we also know that the whoLe DSLR is still in growth, so they might not be making any grounds in market share.
Anyway, thanks for sharing!

For those interested in Sony sales the most recent DSLR sales figures in Japan for 1st half of 2008 are ....
Canon XSi/450D: 14.5%
Canon XTi/400D: 14.4%
Nikon D80: 13.1%
Canon 40D: 9.9%
Nikon D40: 9.2%
Nikon D60: 9.1%
Nikon D300: 4.4%
Sony A350: 4.1%
Nikon D40x: 3.8%
Sony A200: 2.8%
This shows 2 Sony models in the top 10 in Japan. In the west Canon has a higher market share than Nikon whereas in Japan Nikon and Canon have roughly the same share (40.6%).
