I've just had a mail on flickr about one of my pictures being short-listed for inclusion in the fifth edition of Schmap Newcastle upon Tyne Guide, to be published mid-September 2008.
Here is the mail, any advice on what to do here? Quote:
Hi Steve,
I am writing to let you know that one of your photos has been short-listed for inclusion in the fifth edition of our Schmap Newcastle upon Tyne Guide, to be published mid-September 2008.
Clicking this link will take you to a page where you can:
i) See which of your photos has been short-listed.
ii) Submit or withdraw your photo from our final selection phase.
iii) Learn how we credit photos in our Schmap Guides.
iv) Browse online or download the fourth edition of our Schmap Newcastle upon Tyne Guide.
While we offer no payment for publication, many photographers are pleased to submit their photos, as Schmap Guides give their work recognition and wide exposure, and are free of charge to readers. Photos are published at a maximum width of 150 pixels, are clearly attributed, and link to high-resolution originals at Flickr.
Our submission deadline is Sunday, August 24. If you happen to be reading this message after this date, please still click on the link above (our Schmap Guides are updated frequently - photos submitted after this deadline will be considered for later releases).
Best regards,
Emma Williams,
Managing Editor, Schmap Guides

say no. If everyone said no then they would have to pay for images meaning everybody would benefit.

This is something debated on here alot. I see ally's point, but I had a quick look at Schmap and to me it seems that if they didn't go for freely submitted pics from places such as flickr, they may not be able to offer the service they do. As they state, the guides are free for users so I guess they make their money from the on site advertising, sponsored links and such.
The way they credit the photos and provide a clickable link to the shot on flickr is at least a fair level of recognition and a relatively decent advert for your work.
If it was Rough Guide I'd say definitely say no or hold out for payment, but as it stands.......
I think you have to have a ponder on what you or others stand to gain/lose from you agreeing to submit. If you have any aspirations for turning pro, then I guess you have to start building a rep and portfolio somehow. Is this not an acceptable way of doing it? (genuinely don't know). On the surface, it seems to me to be a fair enough request. However, I'm willing to revise this opinion in the face of someone telling me that Schmap are actually a huge profit making organisation or that getting to the point of pro doesn't/shouldn't involve agreeing to someone using your shots in this way.
Difficult one. (still)
EDIT: Just read your edit properly. Fair dos.
EDIT 2: Also just had a look at Schmap site under 'About'. They're not a small organisation are they.

I didn't like the sound of Schmap. I said no to their requests. I think they're being cheap and dodgy. If they were a not-for-profit then yes, but I don't think they are.

Schmap have used one of my shots for their London map (the Albert Memorial) and whereas I would love to have had some money for it I think when you consider the number people taking pics and loading them on to online sites it is unreasonable to expect everybody to say "no" and force Schmap to pay. At least they do ask and give you credit which is a nice boost for the ego
Incidentally Nowpublic have just asked to use another of my shots, one of a robin, for their on-line news site and I have agreed to their request.
If I was serious about taking pics for money I would not be using flickr or even this forum to post them.

Which one do they want? | It's this one of the museum at the exhibition park
Think I'll not bother if they're for profit and looking for freebies |

Technically they don't have to ask though do they?
As its on a photo sharing site all they need to is link it back. Or are the rules different for business use?
This creative commons has be confused.
I've seen a couple of my pics on other peoples blog sites, without permission, but fully linked back.

I have let Schmap use a few images, I don't have a problem in this instance. I treat each request on it's own merits. I just declined a nowpublic request.
p.s. if your photos on Flickr are set as 'All rights reserved', then no one has the right to publish them without your permission (other than yourself) which is why they have to ask. If you apply a Creative Commons licence, then they may not have to ask depending on the CC licence conditions and as long as they satisfy those conditions.

I do agree with allys comment abit but i've just let nowpublic have one of my photos and i didn't mind them having it for use as i thought of it as a compliment as such that id took a good photo that someone wanted as i've only started with a A200 recently and started using actual settings rather than scence type modes of other cameras ive had previously.
I took it at the weekend while visiting Blackpool zoo far from as good as some photos i've seen here but from a starter dslr a vague knowledge of camera know all aswell and a glass window to shoot through i thought it was ok and so did they it seemed |

I am guilty of giving away a bit too much stuff I suppose, try to get down to the cricket as often as I can and always send my shots into the local paper, often get published which gives me a buzz but why I am doing it for free why should they pay me.
Did get a bit of freelance work last year but that has dried up although I still get the "if your down the cricket can you send us some picture" type e-mails.
At present am happy to oblige just in case it can progress me further.
Am in discussions with a local card shop about supplying postcards based on the town, they are keen for me to do it which is great, only problem is that they sell there cards for 30p, want to pay me 15p, but only want 100 of any one sort. Am struggling to find anyone who will print 100 cards at a rate that does anything other than make me a loss so am thinking along other routes.
If anyone can tell me how to make money from all my gear I would appreciate it.
Bill

Update - paper rang today - covering the local team (Cornard United) on saturday afternoon - will get paid £7 per picture - 90 minutes I can easily do a thousand or so if I keep my finger down ! Oh, what ? Only get paid for the pictures published !!!
Oh well as least they remembered me from last year.

I approached the local paper about doing some freelance work for them and was given a phone number to contact the head of their photo department. After a month of phone calls trying to speak to the guy I decided to put some pics on a cd and write a letter to the guy, which I then hand delivered to his office.Luckily he was there and we had a chat and he told me he would contact me in the near future about possible sport jobs.
I started going to football matches and shooting pics, just to get a bit of practice really and three weeks later was at a game when the guy from the paper turned up to get some pics.He saw me there, said hello and a week later asked me to cover a local football match for them.
I've now done three of the last four weekends for them(was away for the other one)and did a football and rugby match today.
Now I'm the first to admit there are far better photographers on this forum than I'll ever be so perhaps it just boils down to perserverence and luck.Anyway,it might be worth contacting local papers etc and hope someone's looking for a photographer.
