The other day I posted this photo of the unknown insect with a wasp on it's head. After a few days the thing has still not moved so decided to prod it and see what occured.
Nothing happened so picked it up and low and behold its just the skin left so brought it inside (much to the disgust of the wife) and take a couple of photos. |

Cool. Now you have the skin at your disposal, you might want to take a photo with a different background, and also with better lighting to remove the shadow.

Actually you are right there, the first pic may look better rotated.
As for off camera flash, not got that far in my photographic equipment .. not had a dslr that long so still working on the basics |

If you want menacing...
Dark room, dark backdrop, use a LED light as a light source and a slow shutter.....
