Thanks: Gave 14, Got 84 | Jessops ********ting me?
OK, i think jessops are a load of rubbish, they are saying that amazon is rubbish and that they use grey stock, from japan for their cameras and sd cards. Is this me? or are jessops ********ting me? what the hell man. the man must think I'm a fool? I was like where is your proof, he was like oh i know i work in the industry. hahahaha
i can get a 2gb sd card for 6 quid, the same in jessops will cost £30, tell me why i should spend £30.
Oh and what i love is how jessops say "oh you should buy it from us as we have warranty, must better than amazon, you dont have to send it back to amazon" and all this rubbish, so lets think logically if their product is better than the same product on amazon, why is the guy telling me i need a warranty. Hes basically implying that the sd card, or camera will break, therefore I will need the warranty. so therefore I will buy from amazon who don't boost about their warranty.
I can get the nikon d40 for £241 from amazon £30 cheaper than jessops, so why would i buy from them?
foolish people man.
Oh and they said, we don't price match. I swear someone else oh this forum got a price match.
and what i also don't like is the fact they don't like you if you go to the shop looking around cameras, deciding what camera to buy. Now who the hell goes to the shop looks at a 300 quid camera and buys it there and then, the salesman don't even tell you what focal length and stuff means. The only reason I know now is thanks to youtube.

Jessops wouldn't even price match their own website I was going to get my D300 in store they wouldn't even throw in a free memory card to sweeten the deal so in the end I went home and bought it from Jessops website.

Just make sure it IS from Amazon and not one of their marketplace sellers - especially with cards.

Yeh, they really pee me off. I'm going to get it from amazon, I have never had a single problem from amazon. Great customer service, they even send the item early with supersave delivery!
Can't wait to get the d40.

to play devils advocate for a bit:
In their defence, IF you did have a problem with you're new purchase, it would usually be easier to walk into a shop and arrange for a replacement or repair than it is to contact an internet store and arrange for a collection of the item and send it back to them (some will also expect you to pay for this privilage too). It's not a product will break, but in case it does you have the facility to get hold of someone and sort it out face to face (and with some stores opening till late and 7 days a week) thats a lot better than many internet stores.
You do have to be a bit careful when buying from Amazon (and play and ebay etc) to make sure you are buying UK stocks from the main site and not from their marketplace sellers which may not have the same exacting customer service standards.
With price matches, it ALWAYS depends on WHO you talk to (don't talk to the most junior people and don't go to the manager - the middle men are you're best bet as they have a little experinence and a little autonomy) and most importantly your ATTITUDE. If JP comes up to me giving it all that, to be honest I'll quite happily lose the sale. If on the other hand, you're polite and genuine, I'll do my best (within store manager limits) to get you a good deal. Please also note that alot of staff discount amounts to 10% off retail price, so expecting to get more than that is frankly taking the ****. Also alot of webstores are run independently of their high street sister stores and as such there are often web exclusive and in store exclusive deals and often communications NOT to price match. Recently, we have had communications clearly stating that certain items are NOT to be discounted in anyway (even including the usual discounts on warranties, free cards etc...)
By the way, I DONT WORK FOR JESSOPS (just another high street retailer)

I've had the same line fed by currys, PC World and various other retailers to which I've just said: What if it breaks in 6 months, can I bring it back here? I'll buy it now!
... and.. then the flinching and excuses start, no you'll have to send to the manufacturer contact their helpline direct, etc... well then, why were you pulling amazon/other internet retailers down!?
Oh we're a shop you see... Yes I do perfectly reasonably but if there's no benfit of coming in here and having a chat with you and you sending a repair man (or woman) around to sort the problem then what's the benefit?
If I ever need to contact Amazon I know they'll call me back but currys, etc will have me ring their 0870 lines waiting 20 mins before I'm answered too and then give me the usual runaround.
NO Thanks, I'd just like to save some money today

I have never had a problem with Amazon whenever I have purchased anything from there.
Just a little "thumbs up" for Dixons here.
I ordered a new camera from them the other week, ordered online using their pricematch facility. I was advised 5 days for delivery but the camera arrived just two days later. After using it for a few days I realised that something wasn't quite right with it. I rang Dixons customer care and spoke to a really helpful lady who was very sympathetic and arranged for collection of the camera the following day (at their expense) with the promise of a replacement one as soon as possible. She told me that the courier would give me a receipt with a number on it, and gave me her direct number to ring as soon as the guy had been to let her know what the number was and this would enable her to send me out the replacement without having to wait for it to arrive back into stock. Courier called on Friday afternoon, I rang as soon as he had left and my new camera arrived yesterday morning and included a free 2gb SD card by way of apology. What a nice gesture....and brilliant service from one of the "big boys".
Dixons price? £190.00 delivered
Jessops price? £282.60

...and people wonder why Jessops are closing stores across the UK?
Every time i've been into Jessops i've have to wait ages to speak to someone - why- because they are sorting out photo processing! This must be generating more revenue.....
Not price matching your own website is just crap! If it shares the brand name, it shares the profits!
You want advice and information -go on the internet.
You want cheap prices and a better deal - go on the internet
You want to hold a camera, get a feel - go on the high street.
I think the days of Jessops being a source of independent advice are numbered, its just another high street chain saturating the market.
/end of the early morning rant!

Some advice regarding Amazon they are just as bad as any other retailer. Just read the information and make sure you know who is selling you what. Its a personal thing, thats buying stuff and each of us all have good and bad stories to tell you.
I will leave mine to some other time......Jessops price match based on store turnover. Meaning the bigger stores can price match more often than the smaller ones. But if you only have 1 then your stuffed.
Enjoy your new toy

it's called free market. A shop can charge what they like, you can choose not to buy from them. I got jeesops to within £10 of the cheapest price for my D60. I chose to pay the extra tenner for the convenience of 1) not waiting to get it 2) easier to return for repairs if need be. I was free to choose. Amazon are brilliant for returns though so I wouldn't worry on that front, it's just delays via post.
Smaller shops are more flexible as they actually know how much it cost them to stock the product. Bought a few things from fotosense in the shop and dealt with the owner, who was extremely helpful and knocked lots of the prices of everything I bought eg, ML-3 remote and circ pol filter cost £40, £10 under cheapest off the net. He just offered it at that price with a "what's your best price?" i find if you are nice and friendly with people they try their best for you. Be prepared to walk away.
Nikon in the US guarantee their products for 5 years not 2 as here. No manufacturer offers 5 years cover on products that break so keep that in mind to.

Jessops will price match their website. You have to order online and collect at your local store. Online there are various Jessops discount codes - see www.camerapricebuster.co.uk
I got my Nikon 105VR lens online at Jessops as it was the cheapest after the 10% lens discount. I could have got the lens from my local Jessops at the same price if they had it in stock.

You can say what you like about Amazon's returns policy, but that doesn't prove they don't sell grey imports. Amazon are a global company, and they may for some products source them from overseas. So you'll probably find Jessops are not BS'ing you. Jessops are more likely to know who grey import cameras more than anyone else, just as we can spot grey importers by their selling prices.

Oh and I'm not talking about amazon market place, I'm not foolish enough to buy from their. I have had zero problems with amazon. For example the 50-200mm lens kit with vr, costs 130 from purelygadgets, and 200 quid at jessops. I see no real reason to buy from Jessops, its 70 quid cheaper, as I am a student 70 quid is a lot of money!
I bought my Nikon p3 from purelygardgets, and everything comes with an 18 month warranty, my camera broke (my friend broke the usb socket) I sent it back to purely gadgets and sorted, i got a new camera. On the other hand Jessops only do 12 month warranty! So it was a good thing I didn't buy ti from there. Also you have to factor in the cost of getting to Jessops, sadly I don't live next to jessops, therefore it will cost me fuel etc to get to jessops.
The only good thing about Jessops is that they let you use the cameras.
Even the camera bags are expensives I can get a lowe pro bag from Cotswold out doors for £65 (£35 as i get a staff discount, as i work there) or £85 from jessops. so thats 20 quid cheaper.
Furthermore their memory cards, I can get a 2gb card for £6 from play.com. or £25 from Jessops. I even got an sd card from ebay for £20 back i the day when a 1gb card cost like £50 at jessops. and that was 2 years ago and its still working fine, so all this talk about thing from the internet will break after 1 day is a load of bullcrap!

Personally I don't really see what all the fuss is over grey imports. OK you don't get a warranty, but as has already been posted these are still genuine products from respected manufacturers that by and large are reliable (it really is not in a manufacturer's interest to sell a product at a low margin that will end up costing them a fortune in warranty work). Just because it is in a different country, it does not suddenly mean it will be any less reliable.
Should anything go wrong it is still possible to have the camera repaired, at cost. All one needs to do is a little bit of risk-analysis e.g. do a good amount of research on what you are thinking of buying to see if there are any well-known problems. If so, there will usually be details on the web on what it will cost to have such repairs done. With that kind of information it's possible to look at the cost-saving in buying the grey version and weigh it up against the cost of any potential reapairs and see if you feel that it is a worthwhile risk. The thing to remember in these cases is that the few dozen or so reports of any faults that you may read here or elsewhere are going to be a tiny proportion of the overall quantity sold.
By all means be aware of the risks when buying a grey import, but IMHO it really isn't that big a deal if you go into it with your eyes open |
