A few from Rockingham Press day...

Went to this event today, Rockingham Press day, which is a good three hour drive for me. Set off at 7.00am and got there at 10.10am.

As a track, I have to say that it is only oval shaped which does not lend itself to snapping as there are no s or double s bends that catch the eye.

Also, being more of a test track drivers stick to the walls at 100 mph plus which wont really allow nice depth of field despite being F/2.8 all the way. Anyway, some reasonable stuff. I ended up shooting from all over, even the paddock roof though rain kept breaking up the day...

Had a few drives myself and the Audi R8 is one fast car. My favourite drive was the Ford Fiesta Rally car. Wow, that shifted at we were caning it at 110mph and hitting some coned chicane areas pretty damned fast !!! Likewise the Focus RS was like s off a stick ! I did note that again, on a track, speed is deceptive, what seems like 30 mph is actually 100 ! Odd.

Oh and yes, that is me in the first shot...!!!!

I spotted these on your Flickr Pete. Nice set of shots, perfectly panned and great use of shutter speed to give that sense of movement. I like the very subtle reflection in the 2nd shot

Re: A few from Rockingham Press day...

Were you allowed trackside. I went trackside earlier in the year and found some nice angles, but the photo opportunities from the spectator areas is pretty poor - pit roof with a long lens or through the fencing at Tarzan.

Were they using the whole oval or the infield section with part of the oval?

Cheers mate. Funny, I felt that I struggled today. You know when you cant seem to get into the shoot ? Weird. Still, flickr keeps em alive!

I had access all areas but found no angles as such. As I said, I was on the pit roof. Lets be fair, its hardly Silverstone is it. They had the whole track on the go.

Re: A few from Rockingham Press day...

I quite like the shot on the entry to Tarzan hairpin looking down that straight. You can often get several cars in shot, and have the Rockingham lettering on the oval track outer wall in the background.

Another shot is at Chapman Curve as the cars come over the crest of the hill. Sometimes you can get a car in the background that is going round the oval part of the circuit

I preferred it to Silverstone National circuit (I've had media passes for both), and TBH neither are great.

Re: A few from Rockingham Press day...

Great shots Pete, was this something you were asked to go to or just an open day that anyone could do ?
