Anyone Using Their 40D For Time Lapse ?

So I'm interested in giving time-lapse a go. Reading the docs it looks like some of the software that came supplied with the canon allow connection over a usb cable to a laptop.

Although this is good news I wanted to be able to do this without a laptop, especially when I'm on the road.

Looks like one of the easiest methods is by using a calculator to turn it into a intervalometer. As far as I can tell though this is connected to the remote shutter release connector on the 40D which as you probably know is a canon only design.

I also seen Canon do a remote switch (TC-80N3) for this sort of thing. Anyone know if there is something similar but less expensive (as is the case with the non-branded remote switch for the 40D)

Anyone out there doing time-lapse using the 40D and care to share some tips?

Why don't the camera makers build this feature directly into the camera?

I think what you're looking for is this

However bear in mind the wear and tear that it's going to inflict on an SLR, potentially thousands of clicks in a short period of time.

You will also tend to get slight but very annoying variances in exposure due to the iris opening between shots then closing to not exactly the same position.

Can be got round with software however.

I've used mine on one occasion but tend to use my 400D.

I don't have intervals between shots though because I think it can make it look jumpy. Instead I shoot so that the exposure length is the time I want, so instead of a 1/50s exposure every 3 seconds I just make one 3second exposure with the remote locked down and the camera in continuous shooting. If you start in liveview the mirror doesn't get slapped up and down each time either.

The camera used in the tutorial is the 30D but I don't think it's any different from shooting with any other DSLR..
