Thanks: Gave 289, Got 425 | Nikon D700 - the game's afoot
Soooo - after a couple of weeks of rumours surfacing and then resurfacing it appears that we're going to see a new Nikon announced 1st July.
We've seen alleged leaks of a D700 brochure, which Nikon have then refused to comment on aside from saying that yes, we do use that very print house for our brochures and they did the D3 ones.
We've seen a couple of alleged photos surface today (albeit with an 18-200mm attached by the looks of it)
We know that a Swedish journo has today confirmed Nikon had him sign an NDA until 1st July.
We know that the well-respected German magazine ProfiFoto have delayed their new issue to 1st July due to "Due to recent product innovations that are still so secret that professional photo does not even hint may, in what area and from which manufacturer the new products will come, the original publication date of the professional photo 1 July…." (Babelfish there, not me)
We know that Jacobs have announced a major new DSLR announcement for 1st July. We also know that they have a trade meeting with the manufacturer in question tomorrow (26th) at which point more could leak out.
I know that when I phoned a dealer yesterday to enquire (speaking to the chap who sorted my D3 and lenses for me) he did say that he couldn't say anything. He did, however, add me to the pre-order list for the camera he couldn't say anything about until 1st July. He also knows I don't have any Canon kit in case it might be a 5D II.
Time for Rummy to make his quote perhaps - 'Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns - the ones we don't know we don't know'.
Of course it could be a D3X which doesn't interest me at all. A smaller FF body though? I'd be all over it, as I suspect a few others here would (eh Scott?). It also looks like there will be a new SB-900 flash as well as some new lenses.

It's exciting, I agree. Whichever camp you sit in, I think it's good news if it is a FF in a 'prosumer' body. Roll on next week !
I'd wondered before if the D700 nomenclature could be correct, but I see it makes sense now - it gives room for a D400-D600 DX line, and also a D800, D900 etc FX line.

I think it would really shake the market about if they did release a competitively priced FF body, it would certainly put Canon on their heels which can only be good for the consumer in the long run.
By the way, thats a great price for the 70-200 /2.8 IS.

If it is a new FX sensor camera then we might expect a new 70-200 f2.8 VR II lens to go with it.

My bank have just made my ISA account accessible online.
This can only be a bad thing.

If true I reckon if they come in around £1500 for this it will be a good price.

I understand it's $2999, so it just depends how well the UK does.

I do like the premise of a FF sensor in a prosumer body though; the final thing holding me back from moving from film to digital is the lack of a pop-up flash in the 5D (useful for a bit of fill-in when taking the Speedlite isn't practical). If this prompts Canon to release a next-gen 40D (50D???) with full-frame and eye-control focus ( ) I'll be at the front of the queue!

Really surprised this camera is looking to arrive before a D80 replacement. Seem to definitely be concentrating on the high end Nikon. Very steep financial upgrade path trading in say a D40/x or D60/D80 for a D300 upwards.

I'll definitely be in the market for one of these if the price is right, but will probably wait a few months for the price to settle.

If Nikon update the 24-120 VR (I had heard rumours of this), and that updated lens and a FF D3/D300 hybrid are available before an updated 5D, I may be inclined to switch back (especially if the 70-200 2.8 VR is tweaked as well). Would probably wait for a little while though for prices to settle - it was interesting to see how quickly the D300 dropped actually - 3/4 months should see a nice saving, but I guess it depends on how much it is in the first place. Anything above £2k and that might be me out.
