Sony develops new back-illuminated CMOS image sensor

Sony develops back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, realizing high picture quality, nearly twofold sensitivity(*1) and low noise.

Signal-to-noise ratio improvement of +8dB, for use in consumer digital video camcorders and digital still cameras.

It makes a lot of sense to construct the sensor this way. It will be interesting to see what comes of this development.

The company I used to work for made back-thinned CCD sensors. They produced chips for specialist jobs, including space... just did a search and it looks like some have made it to Mars!:
