Managed to get out and get this with my new Canon 70-300 IS lens. What do you think.

Hi Fontie......my honest appraisal is that it's not really doing anything for me. The central composition doesn't work for me. And the image looks a little on the soft side as well. Some of the petals look a little blown out as well...was this taken in harsh lighting conditions??

Perhaps revisit the subject, change the composition [thinking foreground interest and Rule of Thirds], and check DOF/aperture settings to get the image looking as 'tack sharp' as possible.

I don't know what settings you used but I would try stopping down to about f/8 and changing composition as suggested above. It's just too soft for me.
