Thanks: Gave 242, Got 315 | What bird is this?
I had just enough time to get the camera out and put the battery in (which was on charge) so nothing fancy at all but just wondering if anyone knows what type of bird this is.
2 seconds later some chap walked along with a dog so this was all I got. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...20K10D/1-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...20K10D/2-1.jpg

Nice capture of a Hoopoe, a "Very scarce visitor" according to my Collins guide.
They are native to Africa and Southern Europe, used to see them in the garden in Johannesburg.
Edit: just seen your location, so more common in your area.

I recognised it straight away as a hoopoe form my twitcher days in the late 1960's in my teens.
Nice picture of a rare species for UK.

This would be the last place I'd normally check for such a detailed photo of a Spanish brown Hoopoe.

These are very common in Cyprus, found everywhere, especially during the summer. Don't know much about birding or the birds name, but in Greek it's called a "tsalapeteinos". You actually call someone with that name if he has pointy hair, in reference to the bird
