Abstract sunsets - do they work?

Do these work? I quite like them in an abstract way.
Would like to hear your opinions... good and bad and ugly.

I like them, the one I like the best is your diagonal slanted one on your flikr page. I was messing about with a pic of some flowers I took the other day and found by rotating 90 degrees it seemed to make for a better composition. Some very nice pastel colours in these.

I like the colours too - very calming.
They might work well in a Maximum Security Prison

Might be onto something there, could be a lucrative market fitting out cells with canvas pastel wraps

Had a little project on the go a while back altering angles of pics I've taken and trying to join them together (hope you don't mind me adding) :

Great pic Darren. Nice effect. A bit 'disco' for what I'm aiming for but has a lot of impact. Certainly very abstract.

I'm afraid it might not have the desired calming effect on the inmates though

They'd probably have to be subdued with some HardCore rave music, and either a dummy or 15 packets of chewing gum.

I kept meaning to reply - just never got around to it.

It's an interesting idea, but for me the only one that works is the original - which is rather nice.

The others still look a little to much like a seascape turned around for them to work as 'art works'. Perhaps if you made them look a little less like photographs it would have the desired effect. Then they'd have a touch of Mark Rothko's about them

Thanks Scott. I'm aiming for a sort of really stripy effect, verging on a bar-code. Just need the right cloud formation to come along I like some of Rothco's pictures had to google him though I'm not too knowledgable on art.

onefivenine, if I may pop in my tuppence as an average guy/non-artist/non-photographer...

I can see what you are getting at, however pic 1 [square right] does I'm afraid just look like a photo on it's side and is annoyingly out of balance. pic 2 [antipodean] is obviously more natural looking but still being upside down doesn't feel nice to look at. pic 3 [original] is beautifully calming .

The first pic posted at 90degrees does look like any number of pieces of art that you can but in any number of art/furniture/etc shops so in a sense does work. Certainly the colours are calming and natural.
But I agree with Artie and Liquid. The original works best IMHO. I think the colours and patterns generated by a good sunset are so striking they can rarely be 'improved' on. Viewing it at different angles reduces it to just the colours or patterns and detracts from the sum of its parts.

Seems that the angle shot gets mixed reactions - love or hate - on an almost 50/50 split, which is interesting. I've got the same variation of opinions in other forums - the photography dedicated ones usually offer more opinions of course.
