April Snow in the Peak District

Hi all
It's ages since I posted any photos on here or Flickr. Shame on me.
Anyway, got out and about with my new 40D and 50mm f1.8 this Sunday. My intention was to get a competition entry, but I took a few more besides.
Landscapes aren't easy with only a 50mm on a crop body , but I had a go.

1 - I haven't seen snow like this in the Peaks for a while - the lack of wind meant that everything was snow-encrusted. On the way down to the Goyt Valley, there is an avenue with deciduous on one side and coniferous on the other.

2 Reminded me a bit of a Rothko

3

4 Then we walked to some cliffs where we've seen icicles in the past - not many this time, but the conditions were amazing...

5

6 Nature's Lillipop

7 Finally, I manages to frame a landscape with the 50mm

What amazing time of year!
C&C very welcome - there's a few alternate processing and other bits on my flickr if you're interested. All these are geomapped on flickr I think.

Cheers
tt

Re: April Snow in the Peak District

#5 and #6 are nice, #6 being the best of the bunch - perfect natural pose, good composition, pleasing bokeh.

I don't know if it's something to do with the PP but they feel a little washed out in places, I would be inclined to try and add a bit of vibrance. #1, 2 & 3 are a little too busy for my liking but I can see why you took them.

Now #7, I don't know what to make of it, the first half is good, maybe because there's more detail but it seems to loose something as it goes off into the horizon, everything blends together and it gives it a sort of oil painting effect. I think it might have something to do with the actual terrain and what apepars to be heather under the snow.

Re: April Snow in the Peak District

Thanks dfear - unfortunately on no6 I missed focus o the eyes (It's focussed on the hat logo). It was f/1.8 which was probably a bit ambitious.
It's a shame as it would probably have caught some of the hair in focus too. I have some other in focus shots, but the expression isn't as good - ah well.

I don't know about the 'washed out' look - they don't look like it on my PC, but I do know exactly what you mean about the last one - I tried everything to tease out some layering and depth, but the snow must have evened everything out. Very difficult to process in the end.

Re: April Snow in the Peak District

I really like the second shot because of it's kind of abstract repeating patterns. The landscape shot at the end is nice too, I'd probably crop the sky out though and make it a black and white, good lead in past the bridge to the tree. Landscapes can be taken with much longer lenses than 50mm too

Re: April Snow in the Peak District

It could be this monitor as im at work, I'll have another look when I get home.

Landscapes "can" be taken with longer lenses, but it really is an art! I was trying with a 70mm the other week due to being too lazy to stop and change lenses Needless to say, it did not go to plan at all!

Re: April Snow in the Peak District

The worst part about using the 50mm as a walkabout is that when you see something you like, you can't necessarily capture it. Having said that - anything which makes you work harder can be a good thing sometimes
