I bought my Nikon D40 from Argos on Thursday. Here's a few pics.
Any comments welcome. I'm a complete beginner to DSLR's

Very nice. I love the lighting on all of them. Have you changed any of the settings from the defaults? I am particularly interested in the metering. What about post-processing in PhotoShop or similar?
I ask because I too have a Nikon D40 and am off to New York at Easter and I want to get some good photos - what I have taken so far seem too dark.

Not put them into Photoshop either. Just as they came out of the camera.

You still need a good eye mind
Sure some will say you could make them better with this setting or that or by PP but I think they are great just the way they are

Good shots. nicely composed and you have a creative mind - looking for things in reflections etc. Keep it up 
... and when you find auto mode isn't doing what you want any more then play with the settings.

These are really good first shots! I think they're all well composed.
My faves are 1 & 6. I like the reflection in 6 a lot.
