fill in flash

Hi All,

I am really hoping that someone can help with fill in flash. As far as I understand it (which could be wrong!) is that fill in flash is a method of controlling the amount of flash that you use - so instead of full flash, you can have, well, less than full flash. Is that right?
If it is, how the heck do you get the Canon 400D to show me the setting to change the amount of flash I send out?

sorry if this is a really basic question, I have looked around but I'm stumped!

I believe, but may be wrong, that the 400D onboard flash is TTL controlled and so the camera will decide on the "amount" of flash to be used. This may only be for flashes such as the speedlite's so don't hold me to that.

Again, I think there's a setting in the menu system for flash compensation, can either be lowered or increased. I dont have my camera on me at the moment or id check for you!

I want to put the camera into manual and control the flash myself, so that should be interesting.. if anyone knows how to do it on the 400D I'd be very grateful to hear from you!

Fill flash is actually the term used when flash is not the primary light source. (ie. the ambient light accounts for more of the exposure than the flash does).

To get 'fill flash' it's simply a case of (using manual mode is best) setting the expsure so that you are maybe 1stop under exposed and then the flash will fill in.

To alter the flash power go to Menu, the under the second menu it's the flash exposure comp

Yeah fill flash is to light foreground subjects whilst exposing for the rest of the scene.

This is a recent example:

Exposure set for the outside, flash to fill the inside - you can adjust how much with the flash exp comp setting on the menu's
