Resizing Image Question

Hi all.
Say I have a photo that is 2592 x 3872. How do I resize it to exactly 1280 x 1024?
I've tried this in Photoshop by selecting Image Size and typing in the amount in the Width & Height boxes but when I type it in one it changes to a different amount in the other to keep proportions.

Uncheck "Constrain Proportions" will fix it

That distorts the picture when I do that. Is there a way to crop it to those exact proportions or anything like that?

But it will compress the image in funny ways unfortunately. If you don't want that to happen and can afford to lose a bit of the photograph then resize it keeping the constrain proportions checked and then change the canvass size to suit

...and this will give you a distorted image.

What you need to do is select the crop tool, and in the top tool bar put in your desired dimensions. Then simply make your crop and it will resize it on the fly. Obviously, this will be a slighty different shape crop than your original, but this way alows you to reframe it as you want.

I do the following:

Select All / copy
Resize canvas to what size you need.
Paste image and now press ctrl T and resize, remember to hold shift and alt to contain correct scale.
Now when you save your image as a jpg you will still have all exif info

There are 2 ways you can do this...

1) Resize the image so that one value matches the required dimension with the other being too large. So in the case of the image above, resizing the height to 1280 would leave the width as 1912. As 1912 ia bigger than 1024 then the image will be clipped but you will retain the correct aspect ratio.

2) Create a blank image at 1280x1024 and drag the image to be resized into the new image and rescale it until it fits. Make sure you use SHIFT when you rescale to retain the aspect ratio. Doing this allows you to pan the image round when you get close to the right size so you can scale and crop at the same time. If you zoom out but expand the window, you will be able to see the zoom handles relative to the image better.

Of course, this is dependant on whether retaining the aspect ratio is important, if not, just turn off the Constrain Proportions and type in the value... as was suggested earlier.
