Bristol Rugby vs. Leeds Rugby 2/12/2007

First of all, a quick thanks a good friend of mine - Ad's Khan. Allow me to explain. I was booked to cover this game late in the week but my Mark III is away with Canon, due to have the sub mirror replaced this week. As such, I was stuck as I am running with one body at the moment. After a quick call, Ads lent me his 5D so I was able to commit to the game and get some good stuff, when considering I was back to 3 frames per sec and full frame at that.

Anyway, truly awful conditions. Final score 13-13. Not bad work. Certainly interesting shooting at 3 frames. The only thing I noted was the slow buffer. Other than that, evidence that maybe 10 fps is sometimes not needed though I did miss the speed at which a Mark II or III was attain three or four frames. So, 300mm F2.8 all the way, ISO 1600 ~ 3200. As an aside, looking at these I realise how far the Canon DIGIC 3 processor has come. Cheers.

Re: Bristol Rugby vs. Leeds Rugby 2/12/2007

Cracking shots. Even more so considering you were down to a third of your normal frame rate. Still - the 5D looks like it did a pretty solid job.

A question on your technique. A lot of your shots are "off the ball" - are you looking for anything in particular when you take these, and when do you decide to go for those shots rather than the action shots with the ball involved?

Re - technique. Todays remit was to capture two or three young Bristol Academy players who have come up through the ranks and with shots like 2,3,6 and 7 its job done. Also pro sports is not always about 'action'. Sure, the actions shots cut the mustard, but it is also about corperate sponsorship, logo's on show, whether lapels, shirts, shorts, rugby balls etc. They can help open doors secure more work and in the case of a local snapper I know, he sneaks 'commercial' action shots into newspapers, which effectively pays his mortgage! Also, the non action shots are just nice 'stock' pix that tell a story, so you are looking for blood, sweat and tears when the action has stopped - refer to the drinking picture...!!!

Re - the 5D. Still a solid camera. Brilliant machine. Would pick another one up in a beat if I had the money!

Hope this explains it!

Pete.

Pete
I'm beginning to think you would get just as impressive with a P and S.
Although a 5D wih 5fps would be just the bizz ( maybe 6D or 5D Mk II)
Each time you post I just open my mouth in awe
Well done indeed!

Pete, wonderful shots as always. One quick question, are thses mainly full frame or cropped to get into the action, your 300mm on full frame is less than my croped sensor gives, are there times when a longer lens is needed ?

Bill

Fantastic captures Pete, for me the ‘hand off’ is the pick of the bunch, but not a bad one amongst them.
How many shots do you take at a typical game?

Cheers Bill. The landscape shots are cropped. The portait shots are more or less as is, maybe a slight tighten up here or there. Well, yes, 300 is 300 on the 5D and I missed the reach of the 1.3 or 1.6 sensor. I started the game with a 1.4 tc on but had to loose it pretty sharpish as it was dark at 3.00pm due to overhead clouds and crazy rain. Ideally, I would like to be shooting at 400mm F2.8 but the Canon lens is £4K plus.

Thanks a lot. Today I shot 150 frames which is slightly less than normal. Plenty of keepers, plenty of shots that appear on a second edit and plenty that will be archived on the PC - oh and a couple to the bloke who cuts my hair as he is a life long Bristol fan, season ticket holder and nice old fella

Re: Bristol Rugby vs. Leeds Rugby 2/12/2007

Hi ya

These are another great set off shots. Not just the action ones I like the way you have caught other moments in the game like 7 & 8 from the first lot.

Cheers Holo
