Filters - Questions ...

I'm currently using the Cokin P system which serves me well until I attach it to the 17-40mm [one of my favourite lenses] when I start to suffer from serious vignetting. Looking around Cokin offer a 'wide' angle adaptor but I'm pretty sure this only adds a couple of mm to the width before vignetting appears again. Currently I'm getting to 24[ish]mm before I lose sight of the bars, the wide would get me to 22[ish]mm.

Anyone used the wide Cokin who could comment? Any other suppliers out there who offer better systems? Do Lee [£200 + VAT for 2 filters, 1 holder and 77mm adaptor ring!] offer better results at the wide end?

Had the same at 19mm on my 17-55 & 30D. With the wide angle holder, I still got some at 17mm. Got Lee instead but pricey

Yeah, saw they were expensive, circa £200 for a single holder, adaptor and ND grad, ND

They better at the wide end though? Really need something I can use accross the board with good results

I think the Cokin Wide-angle holder is good for anything down to 20mm, so you'll still get the slight Vignetting at 17,18 & 19mm.

You could try the X-pro or Z-pro series, I know they're larger in size but don't know what this offers in terms of wide angle.

I use a Cokin Wide angle holder on my sigma 10-20 at 10 there is slight Vignetting by 13 it's gone completely. The specs on Cokins site are 35mm Focal Length not apsc crops.

I use a normal 'P' on my sigma 10-20, vignetting is non existant from 12 up, its definatly usable at 10-12.

BTW a 'wide' only holds one filter, not sure it holsd a CPL either, but then again a CPL at 10mm(16mm) is dodgy anyhow.

Didn't notice that, am FF anyway so would be running with the 35mm specs

This is something I couldn't figure out. Like do you turn the filter on it's edge and insert it that way? Wouldn't work too well for grads would it ...

Doubt the CPL would fit as it's a fixed [round] width, not too worried about that, will probably replace it with a Hoya CPL at some point.

I think with your 5D harri, you'll still se that vignetting coming in at wide angles.

Was using my Cokin P system this weekend, and there was some vignetting at 18mm, but also when I got home to look at the shots I found that some parts of the holder were actually sticking into the edges of the images! I wasn't expecting that.

Does the Lee system get rid of the vignetting and being able to see the holder in your pictures? My lens goes down to 18mm, and I don't anticipate that I'll be getting another which is wider than that.

Yes Lee does, because its bigger basicaly, and bigger (and more quality) = way more expensive.
