How to handle a request to use an image

Morning all,

I have received a request from a small publishing house for the Architecture and Infrastructure Industry. They would like to use a photograph on my Flickr site of the Pagoda at Kew Gardens in a book entitled "Architectural Geometry".

They have asked me to contact them by e-mail / phone to discuss the matter further.

Now as I'm an amateur I'm not sure how to handle this request. I think the pleasure of having a photograph published in a book means more to me than any small remuneration. Should I just ask for the image to be credited to me? I may ask for a copy of the book too, just to see it in print!

Any thoughts on how to respond?

Many thanks in advance.

Yeah that sounds fair enough, although there's nothing wrong in listening to what they are willing to offer first.

Re: How to handle a request to use an image

I would ask for a copy of the standard practices they employ in this situation. If this is agreeable go with it and ask for a copy of the book etc.

Well done too, lovely image

Well done! Quote your standard print rate of £100 and that you retain copyright, and want a credit on the photo. Sorted

Welcome to the ranks of the high-earning professional photgraphers that inhabit this forum.

Re: How to handle a request to use an image

I approached them with my poker face (I.e. chomping at the bit to get my photograph published) and in the end just decided to ask for full credit and a copy of the book. They only have the rights to publish it in this book. It's now a done deal!

Looking forward to receiving my copy - some time in August apparently.

Cheers all.

Well done Keith

Fantastic photo. You must be very pleased with yourself.

Recognition would be enought for me but you might as well make some money out of it - will come handy for your next purchase.

Dude - you need an agent. I reckon you could have cleared £100 at least there. Well done though - great to get a photo in a book you lucky dog.

Noooo! I can just imagine it. "OK, I'll give you £25,000 for that Kia Stupido, but only if you put a picture of me sitting in the car in your showroom"

Re: How to handle a request to use an image

Excellent!!

I also had a similar experience last week...

A charity approached me asking if they could use this image on their website. It will be fully credited to my name. Again no financial renumeration involved - but it was a charity after all.

I actually ended up with a 30x40" canvas print of the "Salesman of the Month" above my fireplace.
