Replacing an IXUS500 - Advice please

Hi,

My 2 year old IXUS500 has developed the E18 error on the weekend. After reading through it seems I might as well replace it

But with what? We'd like something slim and light, we mainly use it for indoor pics, would like IS and it should be easy to use for a 10 year old too. Budget is 200 quid to include a spare battery and a 2GB card as well.

Would welcome any advice.

Thanks,

NC.

ixus 800is, ixus 850is, fuji f31d

What sort of camera are you looking for and how much do you want to spend?

Re: Replacing an IXUS500 - Advice please

hello

ixus 500 is a top camera, i sold mine a year or so ago. haven't been able to find a replacment with same pic quality.

however i now have a ixus 500 again, i got off ebay, along with a fuji f31fd, which i would have to say is a fine camera.
you wont go wrong with this one, good price too, very fast.

stay away from the new ixus range. i've had them all and don't compare (smaller sensers and more pixels don't work)

Re: Replacing an IXUS500 - Advice please

southpaw74, thanks for your post. I actually spent a lot of time reading reviews in the past couple of nights. Have to say that the new ixus (70\75 and 800-950) are getting very good reviews from both buyers and reporters.

I've quite peeved off by this error 18 thing, but there is not much I can do. I hope canon learned from past mistakes and have rectified the issue with the new range.

Other than the canon range, would you recommend any other brand? I don't like fuji really, the design is terrible and the looks is even worse!

Re: Replacing an IXUS500 - Advice please

hello

i do agree with the coments of the fuji (they do look abit boring, good pics though).

i've also looked at the 850is and the 900ti, i choose the 900 because of the dpreview stating better picture Quality.
however dpreview don't really rate these two camera very highly.

i returned the ixus 900 and brought the fuji 31fd and a ixus 500 on ebay, both for the same price as the ixus 900.

i was abit picky with the pic quality and the cost of the camera itself, a few hit and miss pics.

you might be totally happy with a 850is or a 900ti, besides they've sold bucket loads, 850is the most. try looking for a 800is.

oh one more thing, canon ixus 950 is due out soon. check out dpreview.

have a look here. you can see other peoples photo samples.

Re: Replacing an IXUS500 - Advice please

OK, after a LOT of reading both reviews, user opinions and magazines I've narrowed my choices to 2 - the IXUS 70 or 850IS.

The 70 is smaller, cheaper and lighter. It lacks the IS function and couple of other features the 850IS has. Not sure if we'll ever use those TBH.

Does anyone here own the ixus70 and can provide some real-life usage opinion?

Thanks,

NC.
