Government wants to ban photographers?

Government wants to ban photographers?
I don't know how genuine this is, but a photographer called Simon Taylor has posted a petition on the Downing Street web site protesting against Government proposals to restrict the use of photography in public areas. Allegedly there are moves to promote the requirement of ID cards to allow photographers to operate in a public place. What is undeniable is that it is a fundamental right of a UK citizen to use a camera wherever he or she so chooses. These moves direct suspicion towards ordinary people following their calling, profession or hobby.
Taylor himself comments: "I have NOT said that a bill is in preparation, or that legislation is being prepared, but am referring to the ID cards proposed by various bodies which will serve to create an 'uber class' of photographer, and restrict the use of cameras by normal citizens. These cards will only further the suspicion and misunderstandings that many photographers already suffer.
"Worrying injunctions have occurred - such as this one which when you read the wording of the injunction itself, seems to support restrictions from public places.
"I, and many photographers like me, are getting increasingly frustrated at the restrictions that are imposed upon us, the suspicion we suffer and the incorrect assumptions that are made."
You'll find the link here:

Sign, and forward the message, if you are so inclined. You must be a British citizen or resident of the UK. As I write, 20,532 people had signed.

You might recognise some of the signatures from this site, as someone posted about it last week...

Re: Government wants to ban photographers?

That looks to be the same petition that is posted in this thread...

Photography Petition

Roll on the police state

It certainly looks like we're coming to an age of "guilty until proven innocent".

I'll be signing it later today as I havent had the chance yet.

Re: Government wants to ban photographers?

How do they propose dealing with tourists and people with cameras in their mobile phones?

They will be employing special police who will mingle with the crowds and electronically tag anyone seen with something that can record an image, this includes cameras, camera phones and video cameras. The electronic tag, which is microscopic, will communicate with a satellite and the signal will be bounced back to the Pentagon whenever a 'click' or 'record button' press is sensed.

From the Pentagon, the DNA of the person who has been tagged will be recorded and cross matched with every single other DNA record in existence to check for any previous infringement of the law, in any country.

Once this has happened, the information will be beamed back to the British Secret Service and a new file will be created. If there is found to be a constant breaking of the law in sensitive places, the high tech tagging device will take on it's secondary purpose and immediately inject the tagged person with a serum which will instatly paralyse them for a period of 10 minutes, but, they will not fall down, they will simply freeze in the 'Photographic' pose which will make them istantly recognisable as a law breaker to all of their peers and members of the public around them.

Early trial were carried out last year, the image below shows the cumulative effect of all of the procedures mentioned above.

Re: Government wants to ban photographers?

Erm, you do realise that there isn't such a government proposal, nor has anything been mentioned in government about this matter and that the starter of the petition has admitted as such?

See here http://www.phooto.co.uk/rights.shtml

Re: Government wants to ban photographers?

Although I have signed I am not sure of the usefulness of these petitions. These is a very high profile current petition signed by a huge number of people to prevent being charged a 'per mile' charge for driving on the roads, but despite this petition it looks like going ahead anyway. I cannot see a lower profile petition like this cutting much ice. Wouldn't it be nice to live in a democracy !!

Now there's a solution for those situations when you need to take a long exposure shot and left the tripod at home......

Re: Government wants to ban photographers?

A great excuse to get everyone added to Tony Blair's personal mailing list, as ably demonstrated by the petrol petition. What government minister would pass up the opportunity to spin directly to the publuc rather than having Murdoch's minions to do it instead. On that basis, I won't be signing.
