Smugmug -v- Flikr

I use Smugmug for my online photo storage. It seems to do everything I want and quite a few things I didn't realise I could do like Google mapping of my photos (if I put the latitude & longitude in from my GPS or using Smugmaps) - very cool, see here.

However, lots of people use Flikr. Why? Does it have any big benefits over Smugmug? I do pay a small amount for my Smugmug account every year which I dont mind at all, but apparently Flikr is free.

Anyone used both. I'm happy with Flikr but keen to know if I'm missing something.

You can also map your images on Flickr, have a look see here

Flickr does provide a free service but it is quite limited with only three 'sets' available and limited uploads. It cost me approx £25 for a two year 'subscription' which now includes unlimited sets and unlimited uploads (though they have put a 10Gb limit on individual images )

I have not really looked at smugmug, but the thing i liked abut flickr is the ability to classify and tag the images and then add then to particular groups of which there are numerous.

The tags facility is great, for instance when I went to Anstruther in early December I had already looked at where would be good places to take pictures via the tag and map facility it offered

Re: Smugmug -v- Flikr

I use smugmug for hosting my wedding galleries for couple to view and it works very well for that. I use Flickr for my personal "play stuff".

Both have their strengths but the reason why Flickr is such a good example of its ilk is the community aspect IMO, add in the tagging, groups and so on and it's just great.

Re: Smugmug -v- Flikr

The reason I use Flickr is most of my photo friends use it as well, so it's good to show my friends my recent pictures and for them to make comments. It's also cheaper than SumgMug too (25 USD compared to 40 USD).
