RAW - Please Help

Im shooting my pictures in RAW now with my new camera.
I am able to view them as thumbnails in JASC Paint Shop Pro 8 (PRP8) and Nikon Caption Editor 4.1.2. (NCE)
But if I try and increase the size (PRP8) or open the image (NCE) it either comes up as a pixilated image (PRP8) or it doesnt support the NEF file (NCE)

Any help would be appreciated

Re: RAW - Please Help

dont panic, there are plenty of members on here who have a far greater knowledge of this than i, but i dont think the programs you mention support the RAW format and you will have to install one.
I had the same problem and one of the members suggested i downloaded a program called `rawshooter` its a free download and works great.

I am at work so i dont know the actual web address for this, but i am sure if google Rawshooter, it will put you in the right direction.

other than that, others will help you pretty soon.

The programs I mentioned both say they support Raw.
I downloaded Rawshooter as suggested and it won't open them either, or even open them as thumbnails
Nikon call their Raw files Nef and you can set the camera (D80) to different qualities of Nef.
I thought this may be causing the problem.
But Nikon Capture is designed to deal with Nikon Raw/NEF data.
I can feel a panic attack coming on

Re: RAW - Please Help

They do indeed support "RAW", but not the particular RAW files for the D80. Bin Rawshooter as it's been discontinued and will never support the D80. The same goes for PSP 8 (now on version 11).

Ignore the .NEF factor - it's simply Nikon name for RAW files (Canon use .CR).

Capture 4.1 won't support the D80 either. You need the trial of Capture NX for that. You'll find the trial (30 days) here. It's £120 if you want the full program.

Another option is Adobe Lightroom (currently at Beta 4 and available here ). This is free until it's released in early 2007 and will be around £100-150.

If you're using a Mac you could also try Aperture.

Have you tried this? Is it worth downloading?

Yes, and yes - as long as you have a fast PC. It's pretty hungry.

Re: RAW - Please Help

Hi Steve - Don't know if it helps but I have been all round the houses with programs to edit my RAW files from my D200 (you know the one Radiohead hehe) I had PSP X which supported the D50 I had originally but then didn't support the D200 when I changed to it - so I changed to Photoshop Elements 4 which had a RAW "plug-in" which at first seemed to work but recently stopped working! - I have downloaded the Capture NX Trial & so far so good with support for my RAW images without any problems - Nikon are running a deal at the minute with £35 cashback as follows:
Quote:
Nikon is pleased to offer £35 (50 Euros) cashback on every purchase of Capture NX software purchased between 28/7/06 and 31/12/06. How to apply for the Capture NX Upgrade Cashback
Owners of Nikon Capture 4 can apply for a cashback on purchases of Capture NX made between July 28th 2006 to December 31st 2006. Follow the steps below to register your copy of Nikon Capture 4 and claim your Capture NX cashback
This makes the £115 a bit more competitive IMHO but purists would still advocate the full Photoshop for editing (treble the price of NX though IIRC)

Re: RAW - Please Help

Thanks all of you.

I downloaded the Capture NX 30 days free trial and I am now viewing RAW (NEF) for the first time.

I'll try the Adobe Lightroom later when my headache clears.

Any time any of you are down this way, the drinks are on me

Re: RAW - Please Help

Excellent - enjoy and welcome to the dark art of raw editing.

I see photo-specific workflow apps like Aperture and Lightroom replacing the likes of Photoshop for most of us. I have CS2 but very rarely use it.

Re: RAW - Please Help

No idea if PhaseOne Capture one LE supports the Nikon D80, but there is a trial to download and try ifrst. http://www.phaseone.com/Content/EshopMenu/C1LE.aspx
Excellent for my D70s, and best of all, buy a Extreme 3 memory card and the registration comes with that for the time being.

Re: RAW - Please Help

Can anyone clarify whether it is possible to get the £35 cashback on Capture NX without already owning Capture 4. The information on the Nikon website suggests that the cashback only applies to previous owners of Capture 4.

Many thanks

Having re-read the cashback deal it looks as you say to mean you need to have Capture 4 to get the cashback deal
In that case the only cost effective way of buying NX is importing from somewhere like HK (onestop-digital do it for £82.99p incl p&p)
Capture 4 & NX do come up on 3Bay occasionally if you're feeling adventurous
