Illumination tips

Out in dirtpool tonight (Blackpool), I was going to use ISO 100, tripod and take the 10-20 and 24-105. Has anyone any tips or do I just have a few trial exposures.

I am shooting in RAW.

Re: Illumination tips

I'll offer just one tip.

Get steaming blind drunk or you simply won't fit in.

Re: Illumination tips

Tripod, RAW, and ISO100 will be a good start.
Use the timer or a remote and mirror lock up for the best results. And mirror lock up + self timer will get you more shots faster! The self timer is only 2 secs delay when you use lock up as opposed to a 10 sec delay on my 30D.

I would tend to use Av or Manual mode, set the aperture first and then stop up and down the shutter speed for the right effect.

Try some nice long exposures to capture light trails from traffic/trams/ferris wheels.

Keep your wits about you too! Have fun

Re: Illumination tips

You could do worse than look at the exif data on Stevegreens "night time shots" thread
here

They are embedded images and the exif data is on the flickr hosting site

Re: Illumination tips

1. Don't put your tripod in the middle of the road
2. Don't put your tripod in the middle of the tramline
3. Don't put your tripod in the way of Renault Clio's driven by blonde women.

I think to get sharp shots a longer shutter speed will not be a good idea in Blackpool as, from memory, don't the light move around quite a bit in the wind (not like lamp posts in my shots) So i'd look at a higher ISO, wide aperture and as fast a shutter speed as you can get. If the lights are stationary then you can get away with a longer shutter, then you can get the light trails in

Re: Illumination tips

Thanks for the tips, I didn't have time to mess about so I shot them all at ISO 1600 hand held.

Will post some pics tomorrow after work, they need a bit of tweaking.
