trying to have a black bar fade to white in PS

hi,

I am creating a poster and i need a black bar at the top (about 3 inches high) that fades into white for the rest of the picture. the logo is black and white and will sit onthe black bar.

cant find how to do it in photoshop though.

any ideas?

Re: trying to have a black bar fade to white in PS

Make your foreground black, and your background white in the colour palette at the bottom of the tool bar.

Marquee the area where you want the fade to happen.

Choose the gradient tool, which is located as an option of the fill/paintbucket tool. Select foreground to background in the top tool bar

Drag a start and end point within your slection (from top to bottom)

Should work

Re: trying to have a black bar fade to white in PS

thanks - thats the one.

when i move the logo over it doesn't show up - just a white box. do i need to select a 'bring to front' type option?

ignore that - had to flatten the image first

Re: trying to have a black bar fade to white in PS

you didnt have to flatten and id advise you dont normally flatten your images. It seems that you made your gradient on a layer above your logo... there is a little layer palette somewhere on your screenn (you might have to go to windows>layers) but this will tell you which layers you have, you will most likely have a white background, your logo then your black gradient on top, just drag your gradient layer (click and drag the bar in the layers pallette) to the little line inbetween the 2 layers below (basically your rearranging your layer order, top of the list is "on top" bottom is background)

Cool Re: trying to have a black bar fade to white in PS

Hi,

I did a tutorial a loooong time ago to learn people the basics of layers. It was for another site which has unfortunately closed down now... Maybe it will help, maybe it won't!!!!

It's quite old and the links mentioned on there don't work anymore, however the content is still good!

http://www.freewebs.com/enigmaphotos/tutorials.htm

Hope this helps you out a little.

Thanks,
Dean

Re: trying to have a black bar fade to white in PS

Thanks for the help.

I think my problem was trying to do it all on one layer.

I opened a blank page and added the gradient then opened the logo and copied it across

will try again but with 3 layers - blank background, a gradient layer, and the logo.

Re: trying to have a black bar fade to white in PS

you got it, get into the habbit of doing everything on its own layer. Things arent objects like in illustrator or quark so if you have 2 things on one layer they cant be moved independently having to use one of the lassos
