Next lens choice.

I have a 350D with 10-20mm and the kit lens. I have the 50mm f1.8 aswell.

I was thinking of going for a 24-105 next, any suggestions?
Anything similar for less money?
Will the 24-105 be good for portraits?

I don't need any bigger zoom for now.

24-105 is a great lens, and a great combination with that 10-20. I have it and its my standard lens for walking around.

Perfect for portraits - short enough for indoors, long enough to get some distance for candids of the kids. And f4 is fine for most 'normal' shooting - nice shallow DOF at 105, but enough to get a full sharp face. And the IS is a godsend.

Expensive, but worth it IMO.

Question

What about the Sigma 18-125mm f3.5-5.6DC?

It's certainly a cheaper alternative.

£693 for the 24-105, seems like a good price?

Anyone had any experience using the 24-105mm in a studio? Just wondering what sort of results you got with that.

That looks a good price. £750 is about average online, and I paid £799 in LCE Reading.

Not tried it in a studio, but it is a very good quality lense. As long as you're OK with f4 it should be fine.

Thanks. I have the 50mm f/1.8 so if I'm desperate for a more obvious DOF then I could use that. Seems like availability is a major issue though for most retailers.

Have you tried KERSO on ebay or POTN? I've got quotes and bought many items from him. He does not advertise all of his stock. He is very reliable if you don't mind US sourced lenses. Also I think, but don't quote me, that US stock comes with international warrantee where as Asia stock doesn't. I bought this lens and absolutely love it. I could do with something slightly shorter and faster to compliment it for some of the indoor shots I do handheld, but I'd imagine on a tripod or with good light it will be fine. It is a good quality lens and PQ is great.

Needs to be in stock before they will match. Might make an exception as it's their sister site though

JMJr - Sorry if you've done this already but if you search www.flickr.com for "24-105" with or without Canon & L you'll turn up loads of photos where people have included that in the name / tag / set name etc - most helpful when researching new equipment etc IMHO ... Paul
PS - I've found that a lot of people in Flicr would tag this lens as "24105" so might be worth searching that too ...
