HP R817 - solvable problem or replacement needed?

I have been using a HP R817 for a few months which I bought because of the 5x optical zoom which was the best for a compact digital camera I could find at the time. Anyway, I took some photos at the zoo yesterday and I notice that there is a significant white glow around very white objects, as can be seen in this photo:

Is this a known problem with the HP R817 and is there an easy fix?

Otherwise, what are decent alternativs on the market? I'm after a small camera with a 5x or more optical zoom. I did see a small Kodak with a 10x optical zoom but there were bad reports about a lens jump and no image stabalisation, or something like that - I'm not very technical when it comes to cameras.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

mutamist, was this taken with a flash? As it appears the flash on the HP R817 does apply some ghosting on images when used.

No, this was in broad daylight, though the same does happen when a flash is used too.

Thanks for the review link.
