Book recomendations

Can anyone recommend a book that will act as a good reference for a beginner to Digital SLR use? (And a beginner to ‘proper’ photography).

Is it possible to teach yourself with a book, or would I be better going to an evening class?

Results using new Olympus E500 are pretty good so far, but I feel I’m only scratching the surface of what it can do.

Another forum member Barongreenback told me about this book.
Thanks Baron.

It is excellent for information on exposure.
I found the style so well written that the author made me feel that i could do it.
Great confidence builder and a book that is now never far from me.

BTW (don't want to hijack) if anyone has a copy of this I have some queries.

Echo the comments on Understanding Exposure - got it a few weeks ago and its helped me immensely. I cant think of a how a book could help you learn how to use the triangle of ISO-Aperture-Shutterspeed better.

Very recommended from me.

Probably a daft question but does the info in this book apply to compacts that can change shutter speed, ISO etc or it is just for SLR?

Thanks guys. The Understanding Exposure book looks good, the amazon reviews seem good too. I thik I'll take this as a starting point.
