What's the big deal with a EF50mm f/1.8 ll Lens? (genuine quesion)

What's the big deal with a EF50mm f/1.8 ll Lens? From what I have read, it seems that this is a great lens for taking portraits whilst blurring the background. Is that so? And presumably it's no good for taking pictures of objects far away...? Is it just fixed to one length (ie no zoom etc).

Thanks.

(still to buy my 350d )

Fixed 50mm = 80mm on a 350D, better in low light than the kit lens. Aproaches 'L' quality if you get a good one...cheap worthwhile lens for your bag........

£17 approx, probably get it cheaper if you shop around, look for ES-62 AD Lens Hood.
