Macro photography

Ok.... got my 350D.... got the kit USM lense... got my decent zoom (300mm) with IS.... the one function I am missing at the moment from my old compact is the ability to take "larger than life" photos.

Dont really understand macro photography though so would appreciate some recommendations of lenses for predominately taking macro photos of flowers but also occasionally insects

I would suggest a Canon 100mm f2.8 USM macro lens and a tripod

Tamron and other makes also do canon mount macro lenses, never tried them myself though.

Another very popular and cheaper way is by using a 50mm F1.8 with a set of Kenko Extension Tubes.

Congratulations on your purchase, I think you made the right choice IMO. As for a macro lens I had a EF-S 60 macro when I had my 350D, it's very sharp and also makes a great portrait lens.

The only reason I part exchanged it was it doesn't fit my 5D being a EF-S fit. Why don't you ask to try the 50, 60, and 100mm macro, take the same shot and then go home and have a look at them on you monitor, and then make up your mind.

Just to confuse you a bit more the Tamron 90mm macro is also reported as a good buy.

Another way to get a high magnification for little cash (about £30-40) is a Raynox closeup lens. I'm not equating them to a full slr macro lens, but they are popular on non slr's and produce some very good results.

I got a Sigma 50mm Macro lens for christmas and its been superb. I use a nikon D70 but they make them with canon mounts too.
