Introduction and advice sought

Hello everyone - first of all let me introduce myself to this part of the forum - I have had a latent interest in photography for as long as I can remember. However, in the last few weeks I have started to consolidate my collection of camera's and I now have the following kit; Canon 350D with Std Lens, a 70-200mm L series lens (f4) Battery grip, strap, tripod, couple of filters, batteries etc.

Anyway - I have booked myself a trip to Monaco for the 2006 GP and also the historic GP the week before. As I now have some decent equipment (plus iBook to transfer pics each day) I would really appreciate any advice from the forum on how best to practice so that my 10 days in Monaco will be one to remember.

I don't suppose I would be lucky enough to find anybody who I could get some first hand experience with at a motorsport event in the South East??

welcome to the forum!

im not too big on motorsport photography as im yet to buy/afford a lens that suits. however you really need to practice your panning technique so get down to somewhere like castle combe or brands and get practicing, im not sure how good the spactating is camera wise but get in on it hopefully they might come up with some rules to make formula 1 more exciting between now and next year cuz at the moment any historic/club racing or bike racing kicks its ass for interest!

im off to the rally GB with my certified rally rut photography friend next friday, i hope she enjoys herself and doesnt drop my camera in the mud!


i went to the gold cup at oulton park last weekend but with a 50mm lens it was a futile opertunity trying to photograph the cars moving

Some serious motor sport photographers there. I think the 70-200 might be a bit short unless you manage to get a really great position.

monaco is very very close though, theres no real run off areas so if you can get close to the barriers it will be fine for it. you'd struggle at most other racing circuits (of f1 spec) simply because of the run off areas.

Thanks for all the feedback - I am planning to park myself at Casino Sq during the GP so I should be plenty close enough to capture something interesting - hopefully!
