D300 lens advice

Ok what lenses to people go for. Since theres a focus motor in the body is there any need to splash out small fortunes on AF-S lenses?

Im after a nice wide angle lens for landscapes but loathe to pay the £800 odd for a 12-24 f4.

Can you get equal quality from older, non motorised lenses that would hopefully be a lot cheaper? If so what sort of lens would i be looking for, its the lettering on the lens that throws me.

Do lenses listed as Manual Focus auto focus on the D300 due to the motor in the body?

Anything that's Nikon mount will auto focus, 3rd party the lot. With regards the 12-24 I paid about £400 for mine second hand

Re: D300 lens advice

If you want a 12-24mm, get the Tokina. Circa £250 2nd hand.

Re: D300 lens advice

This thread is worth a read, there's quite a few options in the UWA department :

tamron 10-24 vs sigma 10-20. Help!
