Canon Lenses

Hi just bought a Canon 400d with yer standard 18-55 lens. Will this give me true wide angle? If not whats the recommended zoom lens which will give me a good spread of shots, incl. wide angle, without spending loads on different lenses?

Re: Canon Lenses

18mm on a crop body is considered wide angle.

I think it's good enough for landscape shots but if you really want ultra wide angle, then you will need a dedicated lens like 10-22mm.

That is standard " true wide angle" on an APS-C sensor
17 mm is the most you get before you then get an Ultra wide angle lens
17mm is same FOV as you would get on a 28mm on Full frame ( 35mm) sensor

55mm is a bit short for Zoom
Why not use your lens for a while before thinking of getting one which does more .. You will find most of your shots are catered for by these walkabout lenses with that range of FL
The thing to note about a lens like say Sigma 18- 200 is that there will always be a compromise in optics

If you want a "Standard Zoom" ( 50- 200) you don't have to spend "loads" , UWA lenses do cost a bit though
Either way,
With lenses you tend to get what you pay for , and if these other lenses get infrequent use they may not be the VFM you felt they might be
If you did want to change your standard lens for one with better optics , that, and say the 50mm ( f1.8) may turn out to be better

PS: I was posting at the same time as the above poster so feel free to ignore any repetitions

Re: Canon Lenses

Guys thanks. I'm new to canon and may a victim of "over reading" on this subject. Thanks in particular to Senu.
