Re: Compact with high iso for sports
You'll find on a bright, sunny day that most compacts have no trouble getting you razor sharp images. I may be biased, but the Panasonic Lumix series have always seemed good. They have two compact variants I know of, one very small with a 3x zoom and the other a bit larger with a 10x zoom.
I would also advise against getting something with a stupidly high megapixel count - the more pixels, the smaller the photosites, meaning more noise in images! Yuk!

Re: Compact with high iso for sports
will you get east enough response from a compact? I've always found the focus and shutter release to be very slow. I purpose if you focused in advance you'd be ok.
Don't have any compact suggestions, but perhaps a wildcard.
How about the canon 1000d with 70-300do is lens? Very compact for an slr, perhaps no bigger than an ultrazoom compact. But way more responsive. Expensive lens though.

Actually, the TZ5 does offer it (as did the TZ3 before it - I have one) - see here in Panasonic's own spec sheet: -

"Focus Mode Normal / Macro, Continuous AF (in Intelligent Auto, On/Off)"
