Pics from Cartier polo (England v Australia) at Guards Polo Club
Here's a few shots for you from a polo match with probably the highest attendence in the UK this year - 25,000 people there. Stinking hot, and I mean really hot.
Firstly, some scene setting shots...
#1 Everyone hiding in the shade
#2 What a difference a bit of barrier makes
#3 Alone again. She didn't seem overly happy and wouldn't talk about it.
#4 Celeb shot #1 of 2. There were packs of paps hanging around the celeb enclosure, but I wasn't overly interested as I like the polo personally. Anyway, I got this one and the next just after the team lineup as I was walking back to my spot. Richard Hammond if you didn't know.
#5 Dita Von Teese (though I had to ask - I'm useless at celeb spotting)
#6 People
#7 A rather large lens, though I guess he could get some tight shots of the goal-line action
#8 Hang on, some polo! England #1 James Beim winds up. At this point I wished for a Canon 70-1600 f2.8 lens.
#9 "Treading in" where the spectators squash down the divots made by the horses' hooves in the turf at half time (between chukkas 3 and 4).
#10 Treading in close up study. Nice.
#11 Robbie Archibald slots one in for Australia as James Beim for England leans in, but the Aussies couldn't prevent an England 10-9 win. Go England!!
#12 Oohhhh that's gonna hurt!
I did take a load more action shots of the polo - www.tobinators.com/polo if you're interested. It was a superb match - really fast high goal polo with supermely skilled riders and bonkers horses. Excellent to watch - a real treat.
I have a feeling some others may post shortly....

Nice bunch of photographs (again) Tobers , i was not going to look at them as they would not let Katie Price in there, because she was too common, or something like that

Re: Pics from Cartier polo (England v Australia) at Guards Polo Club
So I read in the paper today. Strange. I thinkl her article in The Times said it was the Cartier tent she couldn't get into, not the polo. Amazingly, the polo itself is really accessible - you dont even need to pay if you park outside Windsor Great Park and cycle or walk in. Worth a look sometime if you are in the vicinity.

All so professional, as we've come to expect. That's not to 'under-praise' them, it's just you're becoming a byword for top drawer stuff mate, especially with the polo. I'm very impressed how quickly you seem to have settled into it.
I agree with Holo though. People is very eye catching. The angle is a very nice twist. No pun intended.

Pretty sure I used the same weapon in CoD4 on the xbox the other day as the guy is using in #7!
Love the contrast and detail in #10 too for some reason.

Re: Pics from Cartier polo (England v Australia) at Guards Polo Club
Ta everyone!
The best bit about #10 (and quite a few other shots taken as the spectators milled about) was chatting to lots of lovely ladies who were all too happy to pose. I dont know what it is about a big camera with a long lens attached .
Here's some more action shots for you to absorb...
#13 Spot the ball...
#14 Mark Tomlinson peels off to celebrate another goal as Malcolm Borwick looks on.
#15 Ruki Baillieu slots a goal home for the Aussies. Check out the way the horse is changing direction. Left the goal post in to give a sense of position.
#16 Starting to get a bit far away but still need all the frame to get riders, horses and sticks (mallets!) in shot.
Cheers!

Great shots there Tobers! I really like #15 .... the way you captured the horse changing direction.

Re: Pics from Cartier polo (England v Australia) at Guards Polo Club
Great set Tobers, that big lens the other tog had looked all lens hood to me, bet it was no more than an 85mm macro with loads of white plastic wrapped round it.
What is the standard lens you use for this now, seem to remember you trying a 100 - 400.
Also where you up in a high tower for a couple of those ?
Bill

Re: Pics from Cartier polo (England v Australia) at Guards Polo Club
I'm using a Sigma 100-300 F4 often with a 1.4x extender. Works well and not too unwieldy.
For some of the high shots I snuck up the inside of the big scoreboard and took shots from the top. The very high one of the grandstand I got whilst up in the TV crew's lift platform - bit precarious! Good vantage point though - it always pays to ask!

Re: Pics from Cartier polo (England v Australia) at Guards Polo Club
As others have said, you really are to darn good at this
#7 really does make the camera look like the accessory
Not wanting to hijack the thread, but I will anyway at least it saves another which lens thread
Do you think the sigma 100-300 f4EX HSM, is better ( reach aside) than the canon 70-200 f4 L USM
or if the canon is better, is the extra money on the f2.8 IS over the f4 really worth it? ( is this a silly question, maybe?)
7day shop at the mo has the 100-300 + x1.4 for under £750
Thoughts?

Great pics, just wondering whether that might be Penny Lancaster / Stewart next to Dita

Quality-wise, there's not much in it between the Sigma 100-300 and the Canon 70-200. At 200mm both are pretty indistinguishable. At 300mm, the Sigma is better than the Canon with a 1.4x extender on. At 420mm the Sigma with a 1.4x is about the same as the Canon at 280mm with the extender.
I'd always got for 2.8 if you can afford it .
