Test Drive: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro

Have rented a 100mm macro lens for the weekend, to try out before I buy.

Hopefully I'll get some good time with it in between decorating. Interested in how it compares with the MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x macro.

Managed a couple of snaps when I got home. Dull dreary and damp here.

Very detailed and sharp, that spider looks a scary piece of work

What is the working distance? The reason why I like the Sigma 150 is that it gives me room meaning I do not have to get too close to the sharp end of the subject.

Re: Test Drive: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro

Thanks Tony, John.

At 1:1 the working distance seems about 5 inches or so at a guess.

I hope to try out the autofocus in AI servo mode when I manually focus at 1:1 and then pull back slightly to track flying objects.

Fantastic shots!

Did it cost a lot to rent the lens?

Re: Test Drive: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro

Nice sharp shots there Dave

Pretty much any 1:1 macro lens will give shots like these when used by a competent macro shooter like yourself. LordV says that he can't see much difference between his MP-E 65 and his Sigma 105mm macro lenses at 1:1, so I am curious to hear what your findings are.

In flight 1:1 macros eh? I wait in suspense

Mike
