Problem with 400d and Tamron Lens
Hi,
I have just bought a Canon 400d and I thought I would get a cheap lens just to play.
I bought a Tamron AF55 to 200mm F/4-5.6 ld Macro. When connect this lens I sometimes get an Error - Err99.
Does anyone know what this means.

And from Canon's FAQ.
Err 99: Perform either of the following actions:
1. Turn the camera off and then on again.
2. Remove the battery pack and then reinstall it.

I had tried removing the battery and the CF and leave it for twenty minutes but the problem was still there.
The Canon lens does not seem to do this just the Tamron. I have contacted the shop and they will replace.
I was just keen to know if it was a problem with Tamron lens (because if it is) there is no point in getting a replacement.

I got the same problem when I put my sigma 10-20 on my 350D for the first time I removed the lens and cleaned the contacts on the lens I've had no problem since

I tried cleaning the contacts with a clean (new) rubber, still no joy.

My 400d was working absolutely fine.
I purchased a Sigma 55-200mm from EBay as a "cheap & cheerful" lens.
Installed that on the 400d and the Err99 kept on appearing - not every time, but too often for me to be happy.
With mine it was definitely the contacts - I cleaned those up and I've not seen the error since.
If you've been through the 3 recognised steps to clear up the problem it could well indicate there is something more sinister going on.

On the Apperture ring on the lens itself if is there a little switch, move the switch, twist the ring to f22 ( i think) and try the lens again, I get this loads especially when swapping lenses alot,

Try cleaning them again don't use a rubber as they can leave a residue if they do they leave an insulating layer.
I just used a clean cloth and rubber the contacts

I took the lens back today and got a replacement. It seems to have solved the problem.
