You have quicktime setup to view the files......

First, right click or hold down shift and right click on one of the files and you should then get 'open with'. Click on select program. Now select what you want to use.......and tick always open with.

Now open quicktime and go into preferences, go to file types and remove the image types that you don't want it to use.

Silly question, but are you sure you took a photo, and not a video?
Have you got a .JPG file and a .MOV file? IIRC when you take a video, you also get a jpeg of the first (?) frame of the video.

Re: photo and quick time help with panasonic tz3

Are you sure that you havn't got it set on 'motion picture' setting as that produces a quicktime and a jpeg. There are several photo modes - try the simple mode, then the normal picture, then intelligent iso and see if you get the same.
Have you tried to play the quicktime file - is it a real piece of video ?
