Fuji Finepix S5700 Owners

Hi all,

I have just perchased a S5700 myself after being recomended it aswell as trying it out in PC world.

I just wondered which settings you all are using as i understand there are quite a few s5700 owners on here.
I will mostly be taking photos of my car and others during the day aswell as night (what i bought it for)
A few pals and i are planning a road trip to london so i would like to take advantage of the London Eyes night lighting etc.

Also whats the difference between Macro, ISO 400 and ISO 1600?
As you can tell im new to cameras, i hope i made the right choice!

Please feel free to post your images taken with the s5700 as i would love to see what is capable of!

Kind regards
Sam

Re: Fuji Finepix S5700 Owners

Hi,

I too have a S5700.

Macro is a setting for taking close up pictures, if you don't it won't focus properly.

ISO is a thing that effects the light going into the camera. ISO 100 is for bright areas (outside, sunshine) ISO 1600 is for dark areas (parties) but if you use ISO 1600 then the picture may become noisy and grainy.

Aperture is something I haven't used much but when the f number is lower the hole then the thing you are focusing on is in focus when the rest is out of focus, if you have f5 or thereabouts then everything will be in focus, a higher f will make the foreground out of focus and put everything else in focus. It's either that or the other way around, can't remember as I have only had this camera for about a week so this is everything I have tried to learn in that time. So most of it is probably wrong.

Shutter Speed is how fast the shutter takes the picture. If you have a fast shutter speed (1/500+) then moving objects will look still, at slower shutter speeds moving object become blurred.

I was having trouble taking decent pictures in low light, then I worked out you have to use everything together. Like you won't be able to use ISO 100, 1/1000 shutter speed with f13.5 and no flash in low light because the picture will come out black. In low light (for still objects) I tend to use ISO 100, f3.5 and a shutter speed of a second or more (depending on the light.) This does mean you will need a tripod unless you have robot arms.

A good indicator of how bright your picture is going to be is the exposure meter in the bottom right of the LCD or viewfinder. If it's all the way to the left then it's probably going to be too dark. A couple of notches to the right of absolute darkness should be enough, you'll have to experiment though.

I usually use Manual mode, then you can change the ISO, Aperture and shutter speed, although that's because I like to fiddle. You may want to try Shutter or Aperture priority modes first.

Like I said I've only had this camera a week or so and before that I knew absolutely nothing about cameras. So a lot of this might be wrong or might not be explained correctly. Hopefully someone else will come in to clarify.

Anyway, pictures.

I like this one because the figurine itself is only about an inch high. (I like that you can see the dust on it as well. )

I like this one because Terminator is a bad ass.

There's some more on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22138096@N04/

I recommend you join Flickr as there is a group of people with just this camera so you can get help/advice.

Sorry for the long post.

Re: Fuji Finepix S5700 Owners

Hi Andy,

Thanks very much for your reply I have read and stored everything in my poor memory as best i can lol. I will save your post in my phone for when im out just to check The shutter speeds i cant wait to play with as in busy areas such as central London theres lots of moving things going on that can ruin a perfect photo.

I'm still waiting for the camera to arrive and after seeing your photos im even more eager to get out practicing!
If my shots turn out anything like yours i will be over the moon. Im useless with correciting software such as photoshop etc so im sort of hoping i can get some pretty decent shots out of the bag so to speak.

Ps awesome pics!! love the terminator ones.
Thanks again
Sam

Re: Fuji Finepix S5700 Owners

Try using Google Picasa2 as a editing software, it's really simple to crop and add simple effects to the picture. Much easier than Photoshop.

Also, if you haven't already, get yourself a 1 or 2Gb SD card and some rechargeable batteries - 2500Mah or higher.

Good luck.

Re: Fuji Finepix S5700 Owners

I bought some Uniross 2500Mah ones from Amazon.

This one it comes with 4 batteries as well. I only got it through the other day though, so can't really say if they end up being good or not. For £8, I thought it was worth the risk.

The camera comes with some batteries to get you started as well.

Hiya,

I downloaded Picasa2, what a great piece of software! Nice and easy to use.
The camera arrived today and i've had a small play with it.
I know its cheeky but what settings would you recomend as a rough guide say for indoors at night, outside at night/during the day?

I have tried some indoor close ups like you posted in the thread but mine are really blured compared to yours.
This is about the pick of the bunch...

Any tips are greatly apreciated!

Thanks again
Sam

Re: Fuji Finepix S5700 Owners

If you are using a long shutter speed then I recommend you use either the 2 second or 10 second timer as well as putting the camera on a flat surface/tripod. If you are really close then try using the super macro function, you can get to that by pressing the macro button twice. Super macro doesn't allow you to zoom though, so you'll have to physically get really close.

In the picture you posted, I think it would be better if you focussed on the front of the car, that way the license plate is in focus. If the room is well lit then try playing with the aperture setting.

Remember to check out the S5700 group on Flickr. http://www.flickr.com/groups/s5700/ if you see a photo you like you can click on it then click more details on the right (it's not there on all pictures) and it will show you the settings etc. they used. The page will look like this one.

Re: Fuji Finepix S5700 Owners

I believe some of those things change automatically. Try holding the 'F' button and also pressing the menu button while in manual mode, see if there's anything in there.

Also, I think someone of them are just slightly different wording than they are on the camera.

To be honest I don't know what half of those things mean, hopefully someone else will pop in and explain them. It might be you can only edit these things properly with a DSLR.

Are we the only two S5700 owners on here?

Oh, you can change the exposure on the 'Shutter Priority' and 'Aperture Priority' modes. Press the little button in the bottom right (like when changing settings in manual) then press left/right to change the exposure. (If I remember correctly.)

The main things I look for in the EXIF data are aperture, shutter speed, ISO and wether or not the flash fired. Mainly because I'm only starting and don't have a clue what those other things mean.

Re: Fuji Finepix S5700 Owners

I just got mine delivered today. Never had a proper camera before but we've got a 3month old daughter so we wanted some proper photo's of her, not camera phone jobbies! Haven't had chance to play with it yet but does it have a 'sports' mode' so you can take pics of moving stuff without it blurring?

Re: Fuji Finepix S5700 Owners

Yeah basically it will try to give a quick as possible shutter speed.
