But no doubt the above will be quicker than whatever you have now as it's a quick lens across the range for a telephoto zoom (and hence why you selected it).
Why not try your hand with a "nifty fifty" 1.8/f first and see if it improves things? You can get second hand Nikkor ones for £50 and it's easily worth trialing, you may even decide to keep it long-term. I love my 50mm for shooting at gigs with low light and for any small-medium , static objects that I can get close to (e.g. flowers). I also find it's a reasonable portrait lens. Basically, I try to use it as often as possible since it's pin sharp.
EDIT: Just looked at your exif data for that shot - 1/125, 4.5f ISO400. 1/125 isn't
that bad a shutter speed. Perhaps too slow for the moving target but it seems the camera wasn't being held completely steady. Were you panning? On your Flickr page the shot "blueflying" might have benefited from panning if it was possible. Try bumping it up to ISO800 to give you shorter exposures for now.
