Advice - New Gaming PC.

Would appreciate advice on a full build. Short notice as the money is burning a hole in my pocket :P

I built an i5 2500K h80 gtx580 system and I didn't like it so sold it.

I am debating either a 2700K or even debating a 3930K or 3820.

Not sure if want a Z68 system or x79. I think I'm going for an Asus extreme rog board 800D case for water cooling (not 100% sure on case)

I don't have a budget as such but I don't want to waste money if it's not needed as I will only be gaming. I need a full system (all components) including SSD for OS. Got other 7200rpm & raptor drive for more space. Also need a good LCD/led Monitor keyboard mouse & possibly headset.

www.aria.co.uk is local to me and priced well.

All help is appreciated as I can't decide, changed spec about 100 times today.

Thanks

I am not purchasing water cooling or a graphics card.

Watercooling I will wait and decide on the loop and next gen nvidia cards to be released.

Thanks again :-)

Thinking

Asus maximum extreme z68
2700k
8gb dominator
120gb corsair SSD force 3
1050w silver rated hx I think. (would get less power if it can power a 580/590)
800D case (triple rad for CPU/gpu loop)
DVD rw drive

27" Asus led monitor

Not sure about keyboard mouse or headset.

Shockingly I will be playin cs 1.6 on this monster but there's a few games I want in the future like max Payne & generals 2 so think i7 would be better over an i5.

I have been debating a 8150..... Are they really as bad as the benchmarks say...?

Thanks

From what i've read I7 has no benefit over I5 for gaming purposes as hyperthreading not used, so if that's all you're bothered about save the money and invest elsewhere.

As dgibbs says, i7 has no benefits for gamers, I built my rig for gaming and I had to leave out an SSD as I couldn't afford it, i5 is the better choice, is more than capable of doing anything you need it do.

You'll only need an i3 for cs 1.6 lol!

3820 + 2600k are the same price, pretty much same benchmarks too, so not really a big deal whatever you go for there, if your wanting s2011 then go for that, but bearing in mind the prices of cpu's are quite high £440-800 etc.

I have a set of these:

and they do the job very nicely, best headset i've ever owned and look the bees knees too!

Just spent £1300. Not even got a gpu yet.

It's a 3930K and rampage 4 extreme.

Have I wasted money or will it be a good pc futureproof?

800D
Hx1050
60gb force 3
Rampage iv x79
3930K
Hyper 212 Eve (temp cooler)
16gb vengeance

Thanks

Not going to start building until I'm 100%

Could even wait for ivy bridge....?

Might swap the 3930K for a 3820 or even change for a z68 and 2500k-2700K

Thanks

I find it baffling you are upgrading for gaming for cs that runs over 400fps on a very low end PC with a gpu like a 5850.

Equally as baffling is why for gaming your going for a 2011 socket board over a 1155 basically your throwing 400+ quid at a upgrade you wont even notice. Depending on what resolution you play at even the new Kepler gpus will most likely be overkill for low end resolutions 1920x1080 and less. You've spent 1300 quid on something you could have paid 600 quid and without using the hyper threading you wont even notice the difference.

So if you wanted to confirm you've wasted money then yes you most definitely have.

A I5 2500k system would have more then sufficed for your needs pairing it with something like a 570 or a 6950/70 (depending on resolution) even with that kind of setup you could've got a 7970 and still have change from a grand depending what items you already had.

I have bought all the parts. No starting the build until tomorrow.

I will play max Payne and generals 2 when released. Will also try mw3 and bf3 on this new rig.

So the 2011 3930K isnt a good idea even for future games?

Will swap for the maximus extreme and a 2500K/2700K

Thanks

2500k if all your gonna do is gaming, 2700k if you plan to do encoding/heavy video editing. MW3 and BF3 will run more then great on a i5 2500k. I had a i5 750 and it caused no bottle necking on the gpu at all, ultimately with a I5 2500k it will be what gfx card you choose that will determine how well it will play. Obviously the 7970 is the best single gpu on the market atm. It looks like Nvidia's Kepler releases will be their mid range cards therefore I doubt they will beat the 7970 but even then a 7970 is overkill at certain resolutions. I expect the i5 2500k to be good for 3-4 years possibly longer till they start bottle necking GPU's by which time you will upgrade again no doubt.

Basically for gaming only I5 2500k is the best bang for buck cpu.

For heavier tasks like heavy encoding/video editing id go for a i7 2600k/2700k I just cant justify the extra 200-300 to upgrade to the 2011 when the 1155 platform will have a ivybridge upgrade path anyways.

Even your motherboard choice is a bit overkill unless you plan to multi gpu setup.

Id look at something like the z68 asrock extreme4 gen3 or gigabyte z68-ud5 both perform very well on overclocking and are around 100 quid cheaper then the maximus boards.

Cheers for all that. Guess i rushed in and just spent 2 much. I just thought the 3930K would be more future proof. Even the 3820 seemed a gd idea for new 2011 platform. The rest of my build is ok i guess? PSU might be over kill?

aye a 750w would be more then enough 1000w plus psu if you plan to use multiple gfx cards.

Personally id go for a crucial m4 for the ssd too as they have a better reliability record and very simalr speeds as your choice.

Most I will get is a 590 or equiv in the next gen nvidia. Might swap the SSD board & CPU then. Will keep the PSU so it's enough juice

Regardless of money should I nt just keep it? Oh and how bad is this... £450 for a CPU and had give £50 for a cooler which is only temp until I fit a custom water loop

theres a h100 cooler going for 57 quid on the classified's maybes throw him a 50 quid offer on it. A custom loop with both cpu and gpu under water will set you back around 300 so by going the route i said there is your custom loop money ready you could do a cpu only loop for now then add in your gpu later.

Ultimately its your money to spend so spend it as you see fit this after all is only advice im offering.

Yeh probs right, can't do anything now until Monday. Just wont open anything. Yes i appreciate your advice though, but ultimately u hear 2500K is best fr games but In 1-2 years would a 3930K be doing more for games than a 2500K?

Rather spend it now then upgrade again if u get me

possibly in 1-2 years it will be but then again a new socket will most likely be released by then and you will be looking at the whole thing from a similar point of view.

Lets be honest your looking at the upper end of the market on your cpu atm, and for a gamer or regular pc user it just isnt worth the money.

Also GPU wise you wont see the high end kepler stuff till the end of summer by the looks of it. The mid end stuff may hit by end of march if your lucky.

But ultimately you will upgrade at some point in the future and who knows what will happen in 2 years heck AMD might even make a chip that is the best for gaming and you would need to replace everything anyways to get onto their sockets.

All i can say for sure is that the i5 2500k for gaming is the best value for money chip and it hits 4.6ghz overclocks (atleast never pushed it higher yet waiting on a new cooler) on a asrock extreme4 gen 3 board that is if your chip doesnt suck heard of some that have trouble passing 4.3.

I understand the desire to buy top end stuff but that is more for enthuiasts who will replace their gear everytime new gear hits, for the average user that isnt as true.

But like I say go with the way you feel about going obviously 2011 socket and a 3930k is a superior chip but you alone have to decide if its worth the extra cost.

I don't really know If it is worth it? I have a spare 560 so that will fine until I find a new card.

I have priced up a system with an i5 and z68 board. It's a £300+ saving so will just weigh it up.

Ultimately... I want a pc that will last 3years+ without needed spend more money.

This is what I might change my build to;

Case - 600T
Cpu - 2500K
Cooler - H100 (push pull)
Board - p8z68 pro
memory - 16gb ddr3 1600mhz vengeance
ssd - force 3 60gb (os)
gfx - pny 580 liquid (push pull on the 120mm) * will this fit on the rear if i mount the h100 in the roof
PSU - hx105w
optical - lite on ihas224

Monitor - AsusVS228H LED 1080P
Keyboard - Not sure
Mouse - Gigabyte M8000X (could always change if someone coulo recommend better one that £50-£60)

Headset - going to use my TurtleBeach x41 or Sennheiser PC155. Both old but good headsets.

Cost - Approx £1500 so £200 more and ive got a liquid gtx580, 22" led & mouse & keyboard.

Lomez; would this be a better build. Appreciate all your advice/honesty so far as i agree with a lot you say but i would rather be paying big now for a machine that will last. 25 now so this is probably going to be my last gaming build so want it to last as much as possible.

Also can anyone confrim this for me.... cooler master hyper 212 evo. doesnt say on box will fit a 2011 socket nor does it on the specs on their website but when you select coolers for 2011 it lists it there so quite confused. guessing i may need to order a new bracket?

Thanks
