Building a computer from scratch...

hey guys, glad to join the community...
this is wat i'm planning on putting together...any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thermaltake Toughpower W0172RU 850Watt PSU - $200 @ newegg
Intel Core i7 Processor 920 - $295 @ newegg
Asus P6T Deluxe Intel X58 - $300 @ newegg

6 GB [2 GB X3] DDR3-1333 Triple Memory Module - $174 @ newegg

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 1GB - $304 @ tigerdirect

Western Digital Cavair Green Hard Drive - 750GB - $80 @ tigerdirect
SAMSUNG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW - $26 @ newegg
Thermaltake V1 Max-Performance CPU Cooler - $60 @ newegg
Thermaltake Spedo Advance Package VI90001W2Z - $229 @ newegg
Logitech Deluxe 250 Desktop Keyboard And Mouse Combo - $20 @ tigerdirect

THE PRICE IS LITTLE BIT ABOVE MY BUDGET ($1500), SO I WAS THINKING OF GETTING 4GB OF MEMORY INSTEAD OF 6, AND DOWNGRADE ON THE VIDEO CARD AND GET GTX9800+ 512MB (ONE FOR NOW, AND POSSIBLY ANOTHER ONE IN FUTURE RUNNING sli)

what do you all think, anything i need to add/don't need?
thanks for all the input,
Priyank Patel

Re: Building a computer from scratch...

Hi Priyank

Welcome to the forum. Your future PC looks OK - nice fast machine. I would have gone for two hard drives - one for system stuff and operating system, the other for user data. Also I would stick with 6GB memory especially if 64-bit Windows is being installed.

What is "Thermaltake Spedo Advance Package VI90001W2Z"? Seems expensive.

Can't see a monitor listed.

Re: Building a computer from scratch...

thanks for the reply...Thermaltake Spedo Advance Package VI90001W2Z is the case. it looked nice . if you recommend a nice case and cheaper then i'll look into it.

so i guess i'll stick to 6gb of memory, but will the video card gtx9800+ 512mb work for newer games?

if i get 2 harddrives, should i get identical ones? e.g. 2X 500Gb harddrives? I was also interested in running raid-0 but since i was only gonna buy 1 hard drive, i was gonna keep that option open for future upgrade.

About the monitor, i already have it, i saw this samsung 19" monitor on tigerdirect about a week ago, and i liked it, so i i bought it .

oh and they system is goin to have 64-bit vista ultimate installed in it. (already have it). I'm not a computer guy, so this project is really big for me, and i'm kinda scared that i might screw things up (and so is my gf, lol talk about having no faith in me...lol) but yea, ANY TIPS WILL MEAN A LOT TO ME, really don't wanna spend money on the wrong things, and even after the computer is built, any tips on installatios will be highly appreciated as well.

thanks,
Priyank Patel

Re: Building a computer from scratch...

OK mate - keep cool and you'll see it through. Things do go wrong but as long as you don't panic or loose your temper you'll be OK!

All the little bits and pieces should be provided with the units (like screws, stand-offs, installation guides etc) so you should be OK there.

Remember to purchase an earth-strap which goes round your wrist and attach to a CH radiator or pipe. This will discharge any static electricity from your body and prevent damage to the sensitive components on the motherboard etc.

You'll need the usual tools - screwdrivers etc.

Can't think of anything else. Keep us posted and good luck!

Oh yeah - check out www.advancetec.co.uk, I think the prices are slightly cheaper than the ones in your post.

Re: Building a computer from scratch...

yea, but the problem might be shipping. I'm from the united states, so i'm pretty sure shippinng from there might be too much!

OH and the prices that i posted were in dollors, and this prices are in pounds...so conversion from dollors to pounds are more too!

is it still cheaper? (idk what the conversion rate is from pounds to dollors) but if i get it from newegg/tigerdirect I'll get the shipment sooner, and if anything goes wrong, i can return it and get a replacement sooner then from the site u gave me.

OK - you gave no indication you are in the US. So how was I to know when you are posting in a UK forum??

Re: Building a computer from scratch...

Why not get one of these Newegg.com - Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Computer Cases, that way you can put more towards your graphic card.
Also one of these Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards could save you another $90

Re: Building a computer from scratch...

sorry didn't really update this thread...i changed my mind a bit in past day...and been playing around with both newegg, and tigerdirect to get cheap stuff...and good enough for me to play my games ...this is what i finally put together...

PCP&Cooling 750W PSU - $115 @ Tigerdirect ($80 after rebate)
Intel Q9550 w/ FREE FarCry 2 - $309.99 @ Tigerdirect
Logitech Wave Keyboard - $49.99 @ Tigerdirect ($40 after rebate)
SAMSUNG 22X DVD±R - $22.99 @ Newegg
COOLER MASTER HAF - $159.99 @ Newegg
WD6401AALS 640GB - $79.99 @ Newegg
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound - $5.99 @ Newegg
ASUS Radeon HD 4870 1gb video card - $250 @ Newegg ($230 after rebate)
OCZ Platinum 4gb (2x2gb) DDR2 1066 ram - $63 @ newegg ($33 after rebate)
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P mobo - $137 @ newegg ($117 after rebate)
LG Blu-ray - $120 @ newegg

TOTAL w/ Shipping and after rebates comes out to---- $1247.98

does it look good...the only concern is that I really want that HAF case, but it does not have dust filter...any ideas on how to keep the inside of the case dust free?

thank you,
Dr. P!
