Question Pure Highway

Hi all,

Has anyone seen the new Pure Highway (DAB for the car).

It looks brilliant to me and perfect to allow me to get TMS to pass the long boring journeys.

Does anyone have any opinions on it or know where it is available?

Thanks in advance

Tom

Re: Pure Highway

This has a great deal of potential, but reviews are thin on the ground and mostly comment on what it should be able to do, rather than what it does in practice.

I have one on order from Empiredirect and they are telling me that they are expecting stocks at the beginning of December.

One other site is offering it, but again stock is limited.

Thats the same situation I'm in, everyone says it looks good, but have never actually used one. I think I'll get on the pre order list from empiredirect too, my new car arrives in a week or so and it doesn't have LW

Re: Pure Highway

I have had to cancel my order for the Pure Highway as delivery could not be guaranteed until after Christmas.
I will now wait until it is actually on the shelves before committing to purchasing one. Hopefully there will be a couple of reviews posted as well.

Re: Pure Highway

Knowing Pure, it may be available for next Christmas. They are notorious for announcing products and not supplying them until months later. I waited 3 months last year for the internal battery for the Pure One.

Some dealers are suggesting the end of January for the Highway, but don't hold your breath.

I had a look in John Lewis, Liverpool last Friday and there was no sign of them.

Re: Pure Highway

A member of another forum has recorded that they have installed one and that it worked well http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...d.php?t=702518
I have searched for a retailer who has it in stock and still can't find any available. JL in Trafford centre and Cheadle didn't have it in stock. Expansys say that it is on order, which pretty much sums up the other retailers position as well.

Re: Pure Highway

An alternative if your car stereo has AUX input is to buy a personal DAB radio and plug it in from the headphone socket to the car stereo. I bought the Pure PocketDAB 1500 and it works flawlessly. Also includes a chargepak that gives 20-24 hrs playback between charges (1800 Mah).

Cool Re: Pure Highway

I brought the PURE HIGHWAY today from a shop in london.I have only used it for about 40 mins on the way home and must say it was excellent, i sat out side the shop and set it up in about 2 mins.I was in a tiny back street behind tottenham court road with the ariel just sitting on the dash board and it found 52 stations but best of all was how well the FM transmitter worked as i have had problems with these things before but this worked crackle free.

Re: Pure Highway

gazzagaz. Thanks for the information. Having looked at the manual on line it looks like the ariel might be in the drivers eyesight if stuck on the screen on the drivers side. Where are you going to put yours and how wide is the ariel?
Thanks.

Re: Pure Highway

You can only use the ariel once if you peel it off it will lose it's stick,so i'm trying different places but putting at the bottom of the window parallel to the dash seems just as good as any where.

Re: Pure Highway

gazzagaz. Thanks. That makes sense. I notice that all Pure literature shows the ariel on the passenger side and the unit in the middle of the screen, which is OK if you don't mind cables trailing all over the place. However I like my cables to be tucked away so the drivers side for both unit and ariel makes more sense to me.

Re: Pure Highway

Having read your post, Gazzagaz, I popped over to Tottenham Court Road at lunchtime today and picked up a Pure Highway (from Spatial Audio - they had a pile of about six behind the counter). This evening, I went for a short spin with the aerial laid flat on the dashboard and I was very impressed by the Highway's sensitivity. I live in a borderline reception area with the North Downs getting in the way of Crystal Palace and Reigate signals, but I didn't lose any of the three London multiplexes or BBC/Digital One. Main problem is where to put the unit - I have a Citroen C4 with a very deep windscreen and raised speedometer display. I may well stick the Highway to the dashboard using velcro instead of using the windscreen mount.

Re: Pure Highway

I have put mine on the center console using a mobile phone car holder magnet and have installed a cheap power point under the dash now all leads are hidden and my cig lighter is free with no cables running across the dash. Today is the first full day of using the highway i'm still very pleased with it although it did drop the signal in and out on some stations but i think you will get this problem on any car DAB radio. I got the highway mainly for talk sport and this station seems perfect only dropping the signal once or twice for about 1 sec all day driving around central London. The motorways are best with the signal at about 98 to 100 %.

I just called Spatial Audio and one of you lot must be there as I type, buying the last Three in stock! B*gger! Just thought I'd tell everyone and save someone the hassle. Looks like we have to wait until the "end of January" shipment...

Re: Pure Highway

Really sorry SkinnE, that was me and I heard you on the phone as the card payment was going through.

They did say that they'd already ordered more and they're due in end of next week. If Spatial was able to get some surely there must be more out there somewhere.

Keep trying - its worth it - just set one up in my car and even though I've got metallic solar film on the windows, which normally kills signals like GPS, it worked really well.

Cheers,
Gadgeteer

Re: Pure Highway

Thanks a lot Gadgeteer, what are you doing with Three? At least is was one of "us". And thanks Gazza for the alternative. I called them and they do have it in stock, but can't take orders over the phone. Being in Chester, London is a long way to go for a radio...

Odd that the little shops can get them, but ringing eXpansys and the like and they say not until the end of the month. Hmmph to the distributors.

Don't worry SkinnE - I already feel suitably guilty. Good luck with the search.

Re: Pure Highway

Saw this device and fancy one but ....

my car aerial is at rear on roof (nissen Primera) I have used a cheapo fm repeater devices but it gives out insufficient power forcing me to crank stereo volume up (increasing distortion).

Does the highway have an internal fm aerial to re transmit or utilise the external dab aerial. This would cut out the losses of metal car shell?
I emailed Pure and they said power probably limited by legal constraints and my (cheapo) device would only have same performance as the Highway?

Any experiences?

Re: Pure Highway

I have just bought an Audi A3. Having had a DAB radio in my 3 previous cars, going back to the limited choice on FM is awful.
As Audi have no DAB option and changing the head unit would spoil the appearance of the dash I have opted for a Pure Highway.
In my previous cars, Honda Accord, Ford Focus and Citroen Xantia I fitted a Bluespot roof Aerial. Because the Audi's existing areal is extremely neat, I am using the Pure supplied screen mounted aerial, which is much better than any glass mount I have tried.
I would strongly recommend the highway. I mainly listen to Virgin, Chill, 5 live and 6 Music which are all DAB only or some AM/DAB.
As for sound quality DAB is marginally poorer than a strong FM signal but vastly better than AM.
However driving all over the England I have found DAB reception to be rock solid without the small breaks in signal/hiss you get on FM even with an excellent aerial.
The only small gripe is the Highway has no remote control which my previous Revo and Sony both had.
To sum up, excellent unit at very reasonable price and easy to install, but best if your existing set has an auxilliary input. I had to buy an icelink 100 for the Audi to get auxilliary input.

Richard.

Re: Pure Highway

Am thinking of buying one so the reviews here have been useful. I'm a bit confused though on a couple of points.

Does the aerial have to be fixed to the windscreen permanently (I'm thinking of changing my car befor September so this is an issue) ?

How does it connect to my stereo, does it need an aux point or sdoes it 'treansmit' like iPod transmitters ?

Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure on the aerial fixing, I'd guess its semi-permanent but could be removed easily enough if its like other screen mounted aerials.

The Highway can output to either method - via aux in or as an fm transmitter.

Re: Pure Highway

I live in Stockport and fitted my Pure Highway today.
When the car was in the drive all was great, plenty of stations with a strong signal and the FM transmission was not too bad either.
However as soon as I was on the move it was a whole different ball game. The Arrow disappeared immediately and popped and spluttered during a 10 minute drive around my locale. I tried changing the position of the ariel around the windscreen and dash, but to no avail.
Admittedly it was ok on Radio 2, but I can get that on FM already!
The outcome is that it is going back for a refund tomorrow. Such a shame as the unit is well made and it looked good on the dash. Ho Hum.

Re: Pure Highway

Got mine today.
Had to resort to getting it from a radio shop on ebay! However, it was still list price and free delivery so I'm happy with that.

Noting the point above about the aerial, my instruction book has an addendum which confirms the aerial sticky is a one-time use.

I've got a Peugeot 407, and for now at least, I just have it sideways in the grille along the dash, about 6/8 inches in from the windscreen. reception is spot on and it's a pleasure to hear Talksport at this time of night (10pm) without the foreign stations cutting into it.

Reception as a portable unit is good too, even with my cheapy Asda headphones!

One small thing I've discovered, and I'd be interested if this happens with others, is that it won't work connected to the car adapter if the batteries are still in, which is a bit of a bind.

Overall though, very pleased

Re: Pure Highway

If you had a Toyota, you could buy a Pure built add in, fitted for ONLY £462.
How about that then.
